We are looking for a Home-Based Controller to join our Client, a growing U.S.-based company. In this role, you will take ownership of the company's core accounting operations, including monthly close, financial reporting, revenue recognition, deferred revenue, accounts receivable, accounts payable, reconciliations, payroll coordination, and sales tax compliance.
You will work closely with the CEO, fractional CFO, and outside CPA to maintain accurate and reliable financial records and deliver clear monthly reporting. You will also develop product-line P&Ls and customer profitability reporting, strengthen accounting processes and controls, and create documentation and SOPs that establish sustainable institutional knowledge across the organization.
This role is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who is detail-oriented, precision-minded, and highly accountable, with strong expertise in deferred revenue and management accounting. The successful candidate will be comfortable taking ownership of the books while collaborating with a fractional CFO who provides financial oversight, planning, and forecasting.
REQUIRED CORE COMPETENCIES
Financial Accounting & Reporting: Demonstrates strong knowledge of accounting principles, monthly close, journal entries, reconciliations, and preparation of accurate financial statements.
Revenue Recognition & Deferred Revenue: Applies strong technical knowledge of revenue recognition and deferred revenue, particularly across multiple subledger accounts and revenue channels.
Management Accounting & Financial Analysis: Develops actuals-based product-line P&Ls, customer profitability analyses, variance commentary, and driver-based reporting to support management decision-making.
Accounting Operations & Compliance: Effectively oversees AR, AP, payroll coordination, account reconciliations, sales tax requirements, and coordination with external accounting and tax professionals.
Process Improvement & Documentation: Builds standardized accounting processes, close checklists, journal entry logs, SOPs, and other documentation that improve consistency, accuracy, and institutional knowledge.
Accuracy & Attention to Detail: Maintains clean, reliable books and demonstrates a high level of precision when reviewing financial transactions, reconciliations, and reports.
Ownership & Collaboration: Takes accountability for accounting deliverables while working effectively with the CEO, fractional CFO, outside CPA, and other stakeholders.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Monthly Close & Financial Reporting: Own the monthly close process and prepare accurate financial statements and variance commentary for review by the CEO and fractional CFO.
Revenue Recognition & Deferred Revenue: Manage revenue recognition and deferred revenue across multiple subledger accounts, ensuring transactions are recorded accurately and consistently.
Accounting Operations: Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, account reconciliations, payroll coordination, and other recurring accounting activities.
Sales Tax Compliance: Coordinate sales tax requirements and maintain accurate supporting records and documentation.
Management Reporting: Prepare actuals-based product-line P&Ls, customer profitability analyses, driver reporting, and other management accounting reports for key accounts.
Financial Metrics & Reporting Package: Partner with the CEO to identify and operationalize core business metrics and incorporate them into the monthly financial reporting package.
Tax Coordination: Work closely with the company's outside CPA to support tax compliance, documentation, and other accounting requirements.
Accounting Records & Controls: Maintain an organized chart of accounts, journal entry log, close checklist, and supporting financial documentation.
Process Documentation: Develop and maintain SOPs for recurring accounting processes to create consistent workflows and preserve institutional knowledge.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Build effective working relationships with the CEO, fractional CFO, outside CPA, and relevant internal stakeholders.
Perform tasks analogous to the preceding and other related duties as assigned.
FIRST 90 DAYS – WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
Establish and consistently complete the monthly close within 10 business days.
Develop and implement a documented monthly close checklist, chart of accounts, and journal entry log.
Partner with the CEO to identify 5–7 core business metrics and incorporate them into the monthly reporting package.
Produce clean, accurate monthly financial statements that provide leadership with confidence in the company's financial information.
Establish effective working relationships and processes with the outside CPA and fractional CFO.
WHAT WE LOOK FOR
Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Financial Management, or a related field.
Professional Certification: CPA or international equivalent is preferred.
Experience: 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience is preferred; candidates with at least 5 years of exceptional experience managing deferred revenue at scale may also be considered.
Deferred Revenue Experience: Direct experience managing deferred revenue in a multi-channel business involving subscriptions, gift cards, platform credits, customer prepayments, or similar revenue models.
Management Accounting: Strong experience preparing actuals-based product-line P&Ls, customer profitability analyses, variance reporting, and business-driver reporting.
Financial Close & Reporting: Strong hands-on experience with month-end close, financial statements, journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger management.
Accounting Operations: Experience with AR, AP, payroll coordination, sales tax compliance, and coordination with external CPAs or accounting professionals.
Technical Skills:
Strong proficiency in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
Familiarity with modern accounting and finance technology.
Advanced spreadsheet and financial reporting skills.
Strong understanding of revenue recognition and deferred revenue accounting.
Ability to develop and maintain accounting SOPs, close checklists, financial schedules, and supporting documentation.

Collaboration: Comfortable working alongside a fractional CFO who reviews accounting work and owns forward-looking planning and forecasting.
