CBC News is looking for an exceptional editorial program leader for The Current, our flagship audio current affairs program that shapes the national conversation and amplifies the voices that define our time. This is a full-time temporary role for nine months, behind a leave. The job is based in Toronto.

YOUR ROLE

You’ll be leading a team of accomplished journalists who go beyond the news - uncovering the human stories behind the headlines, challenging the status quo and driving the cultural and political discourse in Canada.

The successful candidate will be a creative thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of their decision-making, shaping content that plays equally well as a podcast as it does on terrestrial radio. You bring a deep knowledge of narrative storytelling and immersive sound design. You are at the leading edge of changing audience consumption trends on audio and in digital spaces. You identify stories that can be shared across CBC News owned and operated apps, YouTube and TikTok with a focus on reaching our audiences on their mobile devices.

You will oversee our daily coverage decisions and be the go-to person on journalistic policy and judgement. You have experience leading teams covering all aspects of journalism, from breaking news to deep-dive investigative projects. You have a keen knowledge of legal and ethical risk management. You value the service of a public broadcaster and ensure all of our work adheres to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, upholding our core principles of accuracy, fairness, balance,  impartiality and integrity.

You’ll approach your work with an open mind and a genuine curiosity that encourages experimentation and leads to transformative change. You’ll be comfortable challenging assumptions and seeking out a variety of perspectives to better reflect our audiences.

You’re a strategic thinker who sets direction and delegates effectively. You react decisively to major developments, track stories in real time and reshape shows on the fly to ensure our audiences are getting the content they need to know. You understand that the demands of a daily program can be a flat-out sprint to deadline with a myriad of complex decisions to make along the way, so organizational skills are key.

You have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences and consider those in programming decisions. You live and promote the values of inclusion and create a respectful work culture.

You support and develop your team through mentoring and meaningful, constructive feedback.

You’re a leader who is excited to show up to work knowing anything can happen on their watch, thrives when news breaks, and is at their best when navigating change.

At CBC News we value collaboration, with your team and with CBC News colleagues and as such you’ll be required to be on-site at the Toronto Broadcast Centre weekdays. Your daily schedule will be determined by production needs. You can expect some early mornings, late evenings or overtime in this role.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the team and spearhead the development of the audience-growth strategy.
  • Provide editorial oversight to ensure our content is original, relevant, and impactful, and elevates a range of voices and perspectives.
  • Make editorial coverage decisions that align with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Provide guidance on legal risk management.
  • Monitor audience and industry trends and develop ideas and approaches for future programming opportunities on existing and emerging platforms.
  • Coordinate and oversee live, breaking news, and special coverage
  • With support from a Managing Editor, oversee staffing and scheduling decisions and the program’s budget.
  • Identify and develop emerging talent within and outside CBC, and actively support efforts to improve the recruitment of candidates from underrepresented groups.
  • Coordinate training and development opportunities for staff, providing feedback, coaching, and opportunities for growth.
  • Collaborate with programming teams across CBC News to share content, and ensure we are reflecting all regions of Canada.

REQUIREMENTS

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of seven years of leadership experience in an audio programming or related media field.
  • Experience leading teams in a fast-paced, daily, multi-platform news environment.
  • Demonstrated talent as a programmer with an ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production.
  • Superior writing, editorial, and production skills for live and on-demand audio programming and social platforms.
  • Excellent journalistic and critical thinking skills, including a deep knowledge of national and international news and current affairs.
  • Impeccable communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • A strategic thinker with a proven track record of executing on a vision and building new editorial initiatives.
  • Experience with, and a keen interest in creating content for mobile audiences.
  • Proven ability to exercise both quick editorial judgment and long-term strategic planning.
  • A high-energy leader with a positive, team-first attitude and the ability to motivate and coach teams, encourage creativity, and embrace experimentation.
  • Demonstrated skills in talent recognition, development, and retention.
  • Commitment to developing content strategies to feature new voices and perspectives, connecting with younger, and more diverse audiences.
  • Strong people management skills with a keen desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
