Are you an experienced Electrician seeking a challenging role in an essential public infrastructure environment? Join Pima County's Parks & Recreation Department where you will apply journeyman-level expertise in electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, construction, and preventive maintenance to support essential Parks and Recreation electrical infrastructure. The Electrician performs journey-level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, troubleshooting, construction, fabrication, and preventive maintenance involving commercial/industrial-level electrical work.

Essential Functions:

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

  • Performs skilled analysis and repair of commercial/industrial-level (120V-13KV) electrical equipment and systems;

  • Leads others in highly-skilled fabrication or modifications of existing or proposed equipment, facilities, systems or their components from verbal directions, sketches, plans, engineering drawings, or technical references;

  • Provides comprehensive testing and documentation on emergency power backup systems;

  • Inspects, services and maintains assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles;

  • Performs quality control analysis on equipment or supported systems for proper functioning and performs remedial actions necessary to assure optimum operations;

  • Maintains comprehensive activity, operations, service, and usage records on supported equipment and systems;

  • Prepares estimates for unique or complex operations, maintenance and special projects from rough sketches and engineering plans or drawings, and documents use and expenditure of materials, supplies and equipment;

  • Prepares sketches and drawings for work proposed or in-progress to communicate needed information to supervisors, subordinates and contractors;

  • Coordinates own or work-unit activities with other work-units, agencies, or contractors to assure optimal use of available resources and to minimize disruptions of service or support;

  • Monitors contractor performance (including contractor-supplied goods and services);

  • Maintains security and accountability for all tools, equipment and materials, particularly for work in medical, law enforcement, detention, or correctional settings.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of an industry-recognized apprenticeship program in the electrician trade AND one year of experience performing journey-level electrical work.

(Relevant education may substitute for up to six months of the aforementioned experience).

OR:

Two years of experience with Pima County as a Trades Maintenance Technician or Facilities Management Specialty Trade Technician as an electrician maintaining commercial electrical systems and distribution lines of 120V to 13KV.

Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the "Education" and "Work Experience" sections of the application. Do not substitute a resume for your application or write "see resume" on your application.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  • Minimum five (5) years journeyman-level electrical experience, including three (3) years performing electrical troubleshooting in a commercial setting.

  • Minimum five (5) years hands-on experience with electrical equipment, including motors, motor controls, control panels, generators, variable frequency drives (VFDs), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), switchgear, transformers, and transfer switches.

  • Minimum three (3) years experience interpreting electrical plans, diagrams, blueprints, and schematics, with working knowledge and application of the National Electrical Code (NEC).

  • Minimum three (3) years experience applying electrical safety practices in accordance with NFPA 70E, OSHA regulations, and established lockout/tagout, and arc-flash safety procedures in industrial environments.

Selection Procedure:

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Supplemental Information:

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Some positions require a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s) at the time of appointment, or prior to completion of an initial/promotional probation period. Positions requiring a CDL are also subject to applicable State of Arizona and federal standards, rules, and regulations on physical requirements including drug and alcohol testing. 

Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Some positions may require satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems. Pima County determines whether a position is eligible for visa sponsorship at the time of recruitment. Eligibility is based on the requirements of the position and applicable laws and regulations. Not all positions with Pima County are eligible for visa sponsorship. This position will require a post-job offer physical and/or drug screen. This position will require post-job offer proof of immunization(s) or immunization(s) and/or a TB screening. 

Physical/Sensory Requirements: Physical and sensory requirements will be determined by position. Action Activity - bending, climbing, crawling, kneeling, reaching, squatting and stooping; Motion - simple and grip grasping and fine movement; Hearing Activity - in noisy areas, behind themselves and equipment alarms; Speaking Activity - in person; Vision - operate a motor vehicle, operate commercial vehicle, operate machinery, operate forklift/power industrial equipment, distinguish colors, have depth perception and peripheral vision. Frequently required to lift, push or pull objects weighing up to 100 pounds.

Working Conditions: May enter correctional facilities, detention centers, and high-security areas. Other working conditions will be determined by position.
