We are seeking a motivated intern to support advanced metrology development activities focused on improving measurement accuracy and modeling robustness across key characterization techniques. This role is ideal for candidates interested in semiconductor process characterization, data analysis, and design of experiments (DOE) methodology.
What you will be working on
The intern will work with the Process Engineering and Metrology teams to:
1. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) Variability & Error Modeling
• Characterize sample to sample and region to region variability in TEM measurements.
• Quantify measurement uncertainty and establish statistically meaningful error bars.
• Translate TEM measurement error into corresponding DOE model error.
• Assess how measurement uncertainty impacts p values, model significance, and predictive validity.
• Propose methods to reduce overall model noise—either through measurement improvements or smarter experimental design.
2. Ellipsometry Modeling and Material Optical Properties (n, k)
• Support extraction and optimization of refractive index (n) and extinction coefficient (k) for new films.
• Analyze how ellipsometry model assumptions impact derived film thickness and composition.
• Investigate thickness dependent behavior: identify thresholds where goodness of fit (GoF) degrades as thickness increases.
• Evaluate breakdown mechanisms (e.g., over simplified dispersion models, depolarization effects, parameter cross correlation).
3. DOE Data Integration & Improvement
• Combine metrology data streams (TEM, ellipsometry) to build more realistic input distributions for DOE.
• Quantify how measurement error propagates into model confidence levels and sensitivity indices.
• Recommend approaches to improve DOE outcomes (e.g., reduced uncertainty, alternative sampling plans, model weighting).
4. Deliverables
By the end of the internship, the student is expected to deliver:
• A quantified error propagation framework linking key metrology tools to DOE output quality.
• A statistical report detailing major sources of measurement uncertainty and recommended mitigation paths.
• Updated ellipsometry models (n, k, dispersion) or parameter sets that improve GoF for thick films.
• A final technical presentation summarizing findings, insights, and process improvement opportunities.
What we are looking for
• Working towards his doctoral degree with focus on Physics, chemistry or material science. Other engineering disciplines might be considered.

The intern will review PEALD SiN gap-fill process and figure out the mechanism of specific recipe. In parallel, they will review process results and analyze effective deposition parameters for performance improvement. Finally, they will summarize their findings to build the mechanism with physical/chemical model and experimental data.
What you will be working on
The intern will go through process responses by the single parameter skew. Deposition recipe consists of a lot of parameters. Referring to the typical recipe, it will be to start with suspected effective parameters. Then, they will analyze the process sensitivity in each parameter to figure out what parameter is effective and how effective process improvement is, especially on gap-fill capability (GPC profile) and throughput. There should be some trade-off relationships. The analysis can clarify the effective parameter(s) to have good gap-fill capability and throughput. They will propose what recipe should be good to achieve the target or to maximize throughput, if they have simulation capability, they can collaborate with the team and validate the model of the mechanism by the simulation. The final goal is to show the direction of gapfill performance improvement based on experimental data and theoretical models.
What we are looking for
For this project, an intern with Materials Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Electronic Engineering or other types of Engineering (Plasma related is preferred) would be ideal. Considering the scope of this project, doctoral degree level is preferred, although a master’s degree level with specific experience would also be acceptable.

The intern will analyze leakage mechanisms in flowable low-k SiOCH films using I–V measurements and structural analysis (FTIR/XPS). The project focuses on correlating material structure with leakage behavior, using only generalized or literature-based conditions to ensure compliance with ASM’s IP protection policy.
The intern will work with dummy samples simulating typical low-k films (SiOCH-based). They will perform I–V/C-V testing to identify leakage models (e.g., Poole-Frenkel, tunneling) and use FTIR/XPS to evaluate bonding states and composition. The experimental design would use a two-factor DOE (e.g., temperature × cure time). Data analysis will focus on model fitting and correlation between structural and electrical properties. All deliverables will be reviewed and masked to avoid IP-sensitive content.

Job's mission
Each product line of XP8 DCM and JQCM has a complex building‑block structure that supports advanced process technologies. The intern will involve a cross‑functional review of the electrical wiring diagrams and building‑block structures for both product lines, analyzing and identifying design redundancies and common elements. Through this activity, the intern will aim to gain a deep understanding of the process module configuration of DCM and JQCM. Finally, based on the elements identified as candidates for commonality, the intern will propose standardization ideas that can contribute to improved design efficiency, cost reduction, and shorter development lead time.
What you will be working on
XP8 DCM and JQCM are composed of complex building‑block structures (BOMs). In this internship, the intern will systematically break down these complex BOMs and electrical wiring diagrams, reviewing and learning the commonalities and differences across product lines. The analysis approach begins with the high‑cost layers that are widely used across the XP8 DCM and JQCM product portfolios. Next, as part of the compatibility assessment, the intern will examine component‑level differences and determine whether functionally compatible alternatives exist. All components will be categorized into “Common” and “Functional Equivalent” groups, and the intern will redefine the component structure from this perspective. As part of design and development validation, the intern will work with related departments to reassess the technical rationale for the current differences. For manufacturing and procurement optimization, the intern will collaborate with FEMS ME to explore improvements to kit structures. The ultimate objective is to identify concrete and actionable cost‑reduction measures through standardization that can be applied across the entire XP8 DCM and JQCM product lines.
What we are looking fo
The ideal candidates for this internship are students in electrical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or other related engineering fields. A bachelor’s‑level academic background provides sufficient technical preparation to carry out the responsibilities associated with this project.

The intern will undertake a comprehensive evaluation of the Building Block Structure associated with the XP8 DCM product line, with the objective of attaining an in‑depth understanding of the configuration framework governing DCM process modules. Following this evaluation, the intern will delineate the common components and the specification variances across the various applications. Ultimately, the intern will conduct a structural analysis of each application and develop a detailed report outlining the principal design considerations.
What you will be working on
The intern will perform a structured review of the multi‑tiered Bill of Materials (BOM) for the DCM tool. The analysis will commence with the identification of components that are universally employed across the DCM product portfolio. Subsequently, the intern will assess component‑level differences to determine whether functionally interchangeable alternatives exist.
Upon completion of the classification of components into common, functionally equivalent, and application‑specific categories, the intern will collaborate with relevant stakeholder groups (including, but not limited to, the Process Development Team) to evaluate the rationale for such variations and to consider the implications of applying these variations uniformly across all applications.
The overarching objective of this project is to formulate viable recommendations for standardization.
What we are looking for
This project is ideally suited for interns majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or other engineering disciplines. A bachelor’s‑level academic background provides adequate technical preparation to execute the responsibilities associated with this project.
