Position Summary

Are you passionate about supporting families and improving the health of mothers and babies? Join our team as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.

In this entry-level role, you will provide basic breastfeeding support, encouragement, and nutrition education to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers enrolled in the WIC program. Support is primarily provided through a texting platform and phone calls, with occasional in-person interactions at the clinic.

Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills are preferred to support WIC participants who prefer to communicate in Spanish.

This is a peer-to-peer support role and does not involve providing medical advice. Complex breastfeeding or health concerns are referred to lactation consultants, healthcare providers, or other qualified staff. Advanced lactation credentials, such as CLC or IBCLC certification, are not required.

Work Schedule

  • Monday–Thursday, with rotating weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) coverage
  • Approximately 10–12 hours per week
  • Work occurs in intervals (about every 6 hours) between 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM
  • Intermittent position

Training Schedule

  • 4-week training period
  • Approximately 12–14 hours per week
  • Combination of in-person and remote training
  • Completion of required State WIC breastfeeding, nutrition, and participant-centered education modules

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one basic breastfeeding education, encouragement, and support to WIC participants (30%)
  • Counsel clients using phone, text messaging, and other approved communication methods (20%)
  • Educate clients on breastfeeding benefits, overcoming common barriers, and infant feeding basics (15%)
  • Maintain a caseload and conduct routine follow-ups per WIC policies and procedures (10%)
  • Assess client needs and refer to appropriate resources, including lactation consultants, healthcare providers, and community agencies, following established protocols (8%)
  • Respond to questions related to WIC services, basic nutrition, and common breastfeeding concerns (7%)
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential client records (5%)
  • Notify supervisor of changes in client status or any concerns (2%)
  • Participate in required trainings, staff meetings, and continuing education (2%)
  • Promote public health and provide culturally responsive, client-centered service (1%)

Supervision

  • Works under general supervision following established WIC policies and procedures
  • No direct supervisory responsibilities

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Must have breastfed at least one baby for a minimum of six months (not required to be currently breastfeeding)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage a caseload and complete documentation within required timeframes
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and respond appropriately under pressure
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and texting platforms

  • Subject to grant funding

  • Must pass background check and drug screening
