Job Description

Summary:

Supervise packaging mechanics and set up technicians to support safe, compliant, and reliable operation of packaging equipment. Coordinate daily maintenance, troubleshooting, equipment set-up, preventive maintenance, and technical support activities to meet production schedules and customer requirements. Provide hands-on technical leadership, ensure work is performed in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Environmental Health and Safety requirements, and support equipment investigations, improvements, commissioning, and qualification activities. Ensure packaging equipment preventive maintenance activities are scheduled, executed, documented, and completed on time.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Essential Functions:

  • Supervise, mentor, guide, and coach packaging mechanics and set up technicians to increase technical knowledge, troubleshooting capability, and equipment expertise.
  • Coordinate and prioritize daily maintenance, equipment set-up, changeover support, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance activities based on production and site priorities.
  • Ensure maintenance and equipment activities are performed in compliance with GMP, SOPs, Data Integrity requirements, and applicable regulatory and site standards.
  • Provide hands-on technical support for packaging equipment and control systems, escalating complex or recurring equipment issues as appropriate.
  • Ensure packaging equipment preventive maintenance work is planned, scheduled, completed on time, and accurately documented in applicable maintenance systems.
  • Support equipment commissioning and qualification activities, including review and execution support for protocols and creation/update of SOPs and maintenance procedures as needed.
  • Prepare and communicate departmental schedules, work assignments, activity updates, and team performance metrics to support efficient workflow and timely execution.
  • Provide technical input to equipment improvement, reliability, automation, PPI, and CAPEX initiatives and support implementation of approved equipment changes.
  • Participate in investigations and cross-functional meetings related to equipment failures, deviations, recurring production issues, and corrective/preventive actions.
  • Support Capital Engineering Projects and New Business needs with respect to packaging equipment implementation, from user requirements through qualification and operational handoff.
  • Train, develop, and evaluate colleagues to support safe and efficient operation of the function. Provide day-to-day direction, reinforce administrative policies and procedures, and communicate staffing or resource needs to department management.
  • Lead or support structured root cause analysis for significant or recurring equipment failures and develop sustainable corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to reduce repeat events.
  • Support critical spare-parts strategy, component obsolescence assessments, equipment lifecycle planning, and technical recommendations for repair, replacement, upgrade, or capital investment.
  • Promote a safe working environment, report potential hazards, and ensure direct reports and contractors follow Environmental Health and Safety procedures and required work practices.

Education:

  • Required: College/Technical School diploma in a related technical field.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in packaging or manufacturing equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, set-up, or equipment support in a cGMP regulated environment.
  • Minimum 2 years of previous lead, supervisory, or demonstrated team-coordination experience in a related field.

Equivalency:

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong mechanical knowledge of packaging/manufacturing equipment, including basic electrical, pneumatic, mechanical, and control systems.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of packaging, manufacturing, maintenance, and operational processes.
  • Strong knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices and applicable Food and Drug Administration (FDA) compliance requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal, coaching, and communication skills (both oral and written).
  • Ability to motivate, influence, and provide clear day-to-day direction to technical colleagues.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize multiple maintenance, production support, and project activities.
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally and communicating with all levels in the organization.
  • Strong customer focus and commitment to results, with demonstrated troubleshooting, root-cause thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Adept at setting clear priorities, organizing work, responding to changing production needs, and making quality decisions in a fast-paced business setting.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and maintenance/work-order systems.
  • Proficiency with the English Language.

Standards and Expectations:

Follow all Environmental Health & Safety Policies and Procedures. Work collaboratively with fellow team members, modelling positive team principles and partnering to meet project and departmental objectives. Perform all duties with strict compliance to Patheon quality systems Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Maintain workspace in a clean and orderly fashion. Actively engage in and enforce departmental systems to maintain a smooth and efficient workflow (visual management, scheduling systems, etc.). Be client and patient conscious at all times. Understand Key Performance Indicators and strive to improve the performance of the team by identifying areas for system improvements and engage in problem solving. Models positive thinking and is open to change, motivating the team to adapt to shifts in priorities and new ways of working. Proactively identify areas for improvement in the execution of procedures. Communicate risks to timelines in a proactive manner. Consistently strives to improve skills and knowledge.

Physical Requirements:

Light physical effort and fatigue. Walks, sits, or stands for limited periods. May require occasional equipment operation including keyboard equipment. Lifts light items for limited duration. Typically located in a comfortable indoor area. There may be exposure to mild physical discomfort from factors such as dust, fumes or odours, temperature extremes, loud noise, strong drafts, or bright lights. Use of Personal Protective equipment may be required and may include any of the following: safety glasses, safety shoes, lab coat, gloves, hair net, beard cover, safety apron, respirator on occasionally.

Compensation

The estimated annualized pay range for this position in Ontario is $62,500.00–$93,700.00.
