What is the purpose of this job?

The Data Analysis & Insights team is responsible for delivering trusted insight, performance reporting and analytical products that support Rail Delivery Group and the wider rail industry.

As Senior Data Analyst, you will play a leading role in delivering high-quality analysis, business intelligence and decision support across a diverse portfolio of programmes and strategic initiatives. Working with stakeholders across RDG and the wider industry, you will turn complex data into actionable insight that helps shape decisions, improve performance and deliver measurable business value.

Alongside hands-on analytical delivery, you will help drive the evolution of RDG's Business Intelligence capability, partnering with the Principal Analytics Lead to shape the roadmap, governance and standards for our Microsoft Fabric and Power BI environment. You'll play a key role in our transition from Tableau to Microsoft Fabric, helping establish the future analytics platform that will support data-driven decision making across the organisation

What can I expect to do in this job? 

No two days are quite the same, but some of the things you will be involved in include:

• Be accountable for the day-to-day development and continuous improvement of RDG's Business Intelligence capability, ensuring analytical products meet organisational needs and deliver measurable value.
• Help shape the roadmap, governance framework, standards and operating model for RDG's Microsoft Fabric and Power BI capability, acting as RDG's Business Intelligence subject matter expert and providing recommendations on platform design, governance, tooling and technical direction.
• Provide analytical support across RDG programmes and projects, applying data and evidence to support decision-making, business case development, performance monitoring, benefits realisation and industry assurance activities.
• Be accountable and deliver analytical projects from requirements gathering through to insight generation, ensuring outputs are robust, actionable and aligned to stakeholder needs.
• Lead the transition of Tableau reporting and analytical content into Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, ensuring continuity, quality and improved user experience.
• Produce self-service dashboards, analytical products and visualisations that enable stakeholders to explore, interact with and draw conclusions from trusted data while applying strong analytical, data modelling and visualisation practices.
• Independently identify and deliver transformation initiatives that reduce manual workload, improve productivity and increase the value derived from data across RDG.
• Manage and develop two direct reports and a part-time contractor, including workload prioritisation, performance management, coaching and capability development.
• Work collaboratively with stakeholders, data engineering, architecture and analytical teams to translate business requirements into practical analytical and Business Intelligence solutions.
• Proactively present recommendations, analysis and evidence-based insights to internal colleagues, industry partners and external stakeholders to support informed decision-making.

Requirements

You'll likely bring:

Essential

• Proven experience delivering analytical projects that support business performance and decision-making.
• Strong experience developing dashboards, reports and analytical products within enterprise Business Intelligence environments.
• Strong experience designing and developing data models, semantic layers, reusable data products and self-service reporting solutions.
• Strong SQL and data analysis skills, with experience working with complex datasets.
• Experience translating business requirements into practical reporting and analytical solutions.
• Ability to communicate complex findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience engaging with stakeholders and building effective working relationships.
• Demonstrable experience identifying opportunities for improvement, automation and transformation through data.
• Experience of line managing analysts, including coaching, workload prioritisation, performance management and capability development.
• Experience working with senior stakeholders, external suppliers, partners or industry bodies to deliver analytical outcomes.

Desirable

• Experience helping shape Business Intelligence strategy, governance, standards or operating models.
• Experience working with Power BI, Microsoft Fabric or other enterprise Business Intelligence and analytics platforms.
• Experience supporting reporting migrations, analytics transformation programmes or platform modernisation initiatives.
• Experience working in regulated, operational or infrastructure-focused industries.
• Experience supporting the adoption of self-service analytics, data literacy or Business Intelligence best practice within an organisation.
