BP’s Business Technical Centre (BTC) in Pune is an integral part of the Oil & Gas Technology (OGT) division, whose aim is to support the delivery of bp’s ambitions and 2025 strategic shift to grow the upstream, strengthening bp’s industry-leading capabilities in imaging technology. OGT is one of eight Technology Function sub-entities designed to enhance oil and gas delivery by advancing technology solutions in partnership with the operating teams in Production & Operations including TSI in Pune, and others in Sunbury (UK) and Houston (US).

Overall OGT has the three technical hubs (BTCs): Houston, Sunbury and Pune. OGT makes up the Applied Sciences and Technology group alongside Fuels & Low Carbon Technology and Electrification & Castrol Technology, whose remit is to create, commercialize and support the products, processes and technology platforms that give bp competitive advantage and enable our transformation to a net zero, integrated energy company. The breadth of the Technology Function is making a difference in bp’s plans to invest in today’s energy system and help build tomorrow’s. Your early careers program One Subsurface is an early careers programme designed to create a pipeline of diverse professional scientists and engineers who are high-performers, have broad discipline experience, a transferable skills-set and solving the most complex problems of today and of the future. Early career Subsurface engineers will build their experience through challenging development assignments, develop a toolkit of transferable skills for the future, and have a dedicated network of support to help them succeed.

Early careers experience at bp Our summer internships are 8 weeks. You’ll be based in one team throughout your internship, working on real projects that you’ll be able to manage through to completion. Throughout you’ll have the support of a dedicated line manager and a buddy from one of our early career programs. Alongside your day-to-day responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to attend events and socials, take part in training sessions to help develop your interpersonal skills and network with leaders from across bp. The program is designed to help build your skills and technical knowledge whilst also allowing you to learn more about life at bp. This is an assessed internship and may be a potential talent pipeline into graduate opportunities the following year.

About the discipline: (Oil & Gas) Technology We are looking for motivated and curious geophysics interns to join bp’s Imaging Technology team in solving complex subsurface imaging challenges. Together we form an integral part of the Oil & Gas Technology division which comprises expert geologists, reservoir engineers, petrophysicists, as well as geophysicists and computational scientists, who collaborate to conduct integrated research and development, technology deployment, and specialist technical service work through multi-disciplinary squads. We work on pressing business needs across the company: from resource access and exploration, through development and production, as well as in the energy transition. Role and responsibilities Deliver high-quality and high-impact seismic imaging research and solutions, in close partnership with bp’s asset teams and business groups. Develop and deploy computationally demanding computer codes and workflows for geophysical data processing, modelling, inversion, and analysis, as an individual contributor and/or as part of a flexible and often self-organizing team. Work collaboratively between Imaging Technology and bp’s Centre for High-Performance Computing to identify and help evaluate future opportunities that may provide distinctive and differentiating use of existing resources, or investment in emerging hardware or approaches to processing.

Apply good geophysical judgement on the cost-quality curve for algorithm development, in order to progress algorithms via computational programs to workflow application at the right time and quality to address business issues or add new capability.

The precise nature of your internship role and project will be determined by your skills as well as the needs of the business, but your responsibilities include:

During your internship you’ll get continuous feedback and guidance on how to plan and deliver your project, along with advice on what to look for and who to talk to. You’ll also be encouraged, individually and together with your intern peer group to find out as much as possible about other teams, disciplines and operations, to broaden your understanding of the bp business. This is an assessed internship and may be a potential talent pipeline into graduate opportunities the following year.

Requirements The ideal candidate must have a strong academic record, the capability to innovate, an ability to apply technology developments to solve problems, and demonstrate a track record of applied coding skills.
• Pursuing PhD or MTech (i.e. with a research component) in a relevant field, e.g. geophysics, physics, applied mathematics, etc with a strong computer science element, OR you must have already graduated or completed a PhD or MTech/MSc with research in a relevant field
• Experience with developing algorithms such as modern digital signal or image processing
• Familiarity with simulating wave phenomena and various implementations of the wave equation
• Good appreciation of sampling theory and views on resolution limitations
• Experience with signal and noise separation in data processing
• Curious mind, aptitude for solving complex problems, and openness to learn and adapt
• Should be class of 2027 and be eligible for 2-months internship
• Have a willingness to learn, and a passion to excel and deliver results

Desirable skills
• Experience with deconvolution methods both statistical and deterministic is desirable
• Experience with acquisition methods, survey design, or operations would be advantageous
• Knowledge and experience of passive seismic applications for subsurface monitoring
• Proficient in modern programming languages and aware of high-performance compute platforms
• Skills in data analytics and statistical analysis
• Skills in machine learning or automation
