The Impact You’ll Make in this Role 

The Machine Design Engineering Team Leader will support the Engineering Systems and Technology organization, supervising a team of mechanical design engineers who support 3M Manufacturing. As a Team Lead, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Your key responsibilities would be:

• Coordinating and overseeing the work of a team of design engineers to ensure all work meets established standards and project objectives.
• Manage the allocation of work across the team based on individual capabilities, specific requirements in the work, and workload of each team member.
• Directly contributing design engineering work to provide effective machine design solutions to a variety of new and existing manufacturing equipment.

Your Skills and Expertise  

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M is looking for candidates who must have the following qualifications:

 

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering or related field (completed and verified prior to start).

• Minimum 8 years of experience working in a technical, manufacturing, and/or engineering environment.
• Minimum 5 years of mechanical design experience related to industrial machines
• Minimum 2 years of experience in a supervisory role for mechanical design engineers.
• Proficient with machine design using modern 3D CAD tools (eg Siemens NX, SolidWorks).

 

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

• Five (5) years of experience designing machines for web-based or automated manufacturing processes.
• Strong theoretical understanding and experience in the practical design of machine intra-component fit and prescription of dimensional tolerancing.
• Strong theoretical understanding and experience in the practical application of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.
• Thorough knowledge of material characteristics and proper selection of materials and surface treatments to satisfy design requirements.
• Familiarity and first-hand experience with machine assembly and fabrication processes including milling, welding, and additive manufacturing.
• Team player with the ability to contribute in a highly-collaborative, cross-functional environment.
