Who we are looking for

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Fixed Income Portfolio Manager (Vice President I) to join our Tokyo-based investment team.

This role will support the management of institutional fixed income portfolios while also contributing to the development and enhancement of ETF, mutual fund, and future liquidity management solutions. The successful candidate will be directly involved in managing Japanese fixed income and global government bond portfolios, while also supporting a broad range of global fixed income strategies offered to Japanese clients.

Working closely with portfolio managers, traders, client-facing teams, and global investment professionals, you will help deliver investment outcomes, support business growth initiatives, and improve investment processes through innovation and automation. The role also offers the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of State Street Investment Management's proprietary investment platform and processes, while contributing to their enhancement through the effective use of data, automation, and AI-enabled solutions.

The team you will be joining is part of State Street Investment Management’s Fixed Income platform, managing a broad range of portfolios with a primary focus on index strategies. Portfolio managers play a critical role in delivering investment outcomes while ensuring portfolios are managed in line with investment mandates, risk limits, and client expectations.

In addition to supporting existing institutional mandates, the team is actively focused on expanding ETF and other scalable investment solutions. As a result, this role offers opportunities to contribute beyond day-to-day portfolio management through product development, client engagement, operational enhancements, and strategic business initiatives.

What you will be responsible for

As a Fixed Income Portfolio Manager, VP I, you will:

Portfolio Management

• Support the management of fixed income portfolios in line with investment guidelines and benchmarks
• Monitor portfolio risk exposures, benchmark deviations, and sector allocations, ensuring adherence to internal risk limits
• Assist in daily cash management, including monitoring inflows/outflows and coordinating with operations teams
• Work with trading teams to execute trades and prepare trade lists where necessary

Investment Process & Analysis

• Perform analysis on portfolio positioning and performance attributions
• Contribute to portfolio construction and rebalancing decisions using portfolio construction systems

Client & Product Support

• Prepare and update client materials including pitchbooks, fund questionnaires, and RFP responses for fixed income strategies
• Coordinate with RFP and client reporting teams to ensure accurate and timely delivery of client documentation
• Participate in internal and external meetings to explain portfolio strategy and investment process

Product & Strategic Initiatives

• Support product enhancement and development initiatives related to fixed income ETFs, mutual funds, and liquidity strategies
• Participate in cross-functional projects involving investment teams, product management, risk, compliance, operations, and technology groups
• Identify opportunities to improve investment workflows through automation and data analytics
• Support business initiatives aimed at growing scalable investment solutions and enhancing client outcomes

Governance, Risk & Compliance

• Monitor compliance with portfolio guidelines and respond to risk/compliance queries

Collaboration & Communication

• Work closely with global PMs, trading desks, and operations teams to ensure efficient portfolio implementation
• Facilitate communication across teams for portfolio changes, unusual activity, and client requirements

Education & Preferred Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

• BS/BA required
• MBA, MS, or CFA preferred
• Minimum 7 years of experience in fixed income portfolio management, or related roles
• Experience in managing fixed income index portfolios
• Strong understanding of fixed income products and markets
• Experience working in a global investment management environment and collaborating across investment, trading, operations, risk, technology, and client-facing teams
• Experience in client documentation (RFP, pitchbooks, fund reporting)
• Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and investment-related analytical tools
• Familiarity with fixed income portfolio management, risk, and trading platforms.
• Fluency in Japanese and business-level English

Better to have

• Experience managing or supporting Fixed Income ETF portfolios
• Experience with short-duration, or liquidity management strategies
• Experience supporting investment product development or fund launch initiatives
• Experience leveraging technology, automation, or data-driven solutions to enhance investment processes, reporting, and operational efficiency.
