The Digitization Services Coordinator reports to the Head, Digital Collections and is a valued member of the of Digital Programs and Initiatives in the Digital Services and Technologies Division. The incumbent manages the in-house digitization operations at the University of Maryland Libraries in the Hornbake Digitization Center (HDC) - the central location in which most textual, photographic, and audio materials are digitized - and assists with outsourced digitization operations. The successful incumbent manages people, projects, vendor deliverables and estimates, and relationships with collections managers in coordination with the Head of Digital Collections. The Coordinator hires, trains, and supervises hourly student assistants to perform digitization work and quality control of all files and metadata.

The individual manages and prioritizes short-term, user-initiated requests, and balances these with managing long-term projects. The Coordinator establishes quality assurance standards and manages quality control for all digital files and associated metadata records uploaded to all digital repositories. The individual provides oversight for digitization requests and projects, maintains digitization equipment, requests and negotiates quotes and purchase orders, and reports production and inspection statistics.

The Coordinator maintains updated digitization and file management procedural documentation, and creates documentation and instructions for projects with the Head of Digital Collections. The Coordinator assesses digitization operation needs, is expected to remain current with evolving digitization standards and best practices, and will research development for expansion into additional formats


Physical Demands:The position involves primarily sedentary work in an office setting with light to moderate noise. The position works in dusty environments; may require respiratory protection.


Preferences:
Education: Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution of higher education, or equivalent advanced degree in a relevant field can be substituted for two years of experience


Experience:
Four years of demonstrated digitization project management working in a cultural heritage institution or production management in a related field
One year of supervisory experience
Training or certificates in archives, preservation studies, digital curation, or special collections
Continuing education in project management skills

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience with technology to retrieve, develop, and disseminate information products, services, and tools, e.g. project management tools
Experience with hardware and software tools commonly used to digitize, inspect, post-process, and create deliverables
Experience with a digital assets management system or digital repository
Experience working with special collections and archival materials and their specialized care and handling
Experience with identifying materials that warrant preservation
Familiarity with various metadata standards and practices (schemas and thesauri) relevant to digital collections (e.g. MODS/METS, Dublin Core, PBCore, etc.)
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a flexible, production-based environment
Demonstrated ability to handle analytical and detailed work

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: One (1) year of professional experience in providing public library services or digitization services.

Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: 
Knowledge of digitization standards and workflows for various media.
Knowledge of audiovisual born-digital materials and their digital conversion.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.
