Summary of Job Duties:

The Department of Mathematical Sciences in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Statistics to start in August 2027. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment.

This faculty hire is expected to maintain an active research and publication agenda in statistics or a closely related field and advise MS and PhD students on dissertation research. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide effective instruction and advising to students while teaching graduate and undergraduate courses and to have a commitment to university service.

The Statistics group within the Department of Mathematical Sciences consists of faculty members with research interest in Bayesian methods, spatial statistics, machine learning and AI, uncertainty quantification, extremes, time series and biostatistics. There exist opportunities for research collaboration with the growing Applied Mathematics group within the department as well as with researchers in other departments across the campus. The University of Arkansas has an interdisciplinary MS program in Statistics and Analytics and has also started a BS in Data Science. The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a BS in Mathematics with Statistics concentration. The graduate students enrolled in the PhD in Mathematics program have the option to pursue their doctoral research in Statistics.

This is an in- person position. Most university classes are offered face-to-face, and extensive in- person engagement in such activities as office hours, student advising, and departmental, college, and university committee meetings is essential to advancing student success and departmental effectiveness. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

About the Department:
The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers degrees with focuses on applied math, pure math and statistics. Courses prepare students for careers in secondary education, actuarial science and industry and graduate school. Students will receive a broad, interdisciplinary education, highlighting the utility and value of mathematics in many careers and disciplines. Learn more at math.uark.edu.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Statistics, or a closely related field, from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the date of initial appointment

  • Evidence of, or a demonstrated potential for, an active research agenda in statistics or a closely related field

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated research potential in developing statistical methodology that complements, expands, and has potential for collaboration with the expertise of existing faculty in statistics

  • A strong record of refereed publications and potential for external funding

  • Potential for research collaboration with other research groups within the department or other departments across the campus

  • Commitment to, or experience in, teaching statistics courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels

  • Commitment to, or experience in, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in independent research
