Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences

The Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences is an interdisciplinary powerhouse of innovation and collaboration to lead integrated solutions to the needs of the communities we serve locally and globally. UQ offers one of the widest ranges of health and behavioural sciences programs of any Australian university, and the ambition of this Faculty is to leverage its unified suite of esteemed schools, institutes and centres to unlock opportunities within UQ and with external partners to: 

• Graduate health, medical and behavioural science professionals who are champions of interprofessional collaborative practice, culturally competent and deeply respectful of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and leaders in their respective disciplines. 
• Address current and emerging health sector challenges, specifically the need for a flexible workforce with a diverse skill mix, and the need to provide person and family-centred health care through collaborative decision-making in interprofessional teams. 
• Grow our research and impact by exploring 'wicked problems' from a multidisciplinary perspective in collaboration with consumers and communities. 
• Attract research funding from a wide range of sources (philanthropy, competitive grants, government tenders, NGO, industry). 
• Meet the complex health and well-being needs of the population across the lifespan. 
• Provide our students with the optimal range of educational placement opportunities to support their learning. 
• Work effectively and efficiently with a range of partners locally, nationally and internationally. 
• Share resources and infrastructure to further our strategic ambitions and reach in education, research, and engagement.

Academic Title Holders

Academic Title Holders play a vital role in the University’s mission to deliver excellence in education and research. 

High quality education and research in medicine, biomedical sciences and public health would not be possible without the tireless work of our hospital and clinic-based health professionals. These health professionals come from a variety of different disciplines and backgrounds, ranging from medicine through to dietetics, psychology, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and other allied health areas.  

They are vital in training the next generation and to recognise the work of these hardworking health professionals, UQ awards individuals with academic titles.

Every day, our Academic Title Holders teach students, mentor junior researchers, and take on hours of research activity in their own time to improve patient care.

Professor (Level E)

The Professor will have a significant reputation for outstanding achievement in their professional area.  They will make a commensurate contribution to the work and strategic advancement of the University and its students.  In addition to the requirements at Level D, they are expected to demonstrate outstanding leadership in fostering or facilitating clinical excellence in the academic performance domains, recognising that there may be higher contributions in some domains that compensate for lesser achievements in other areas.

In the domain of teaching, they will have demonstrated exceptional and sustained performance in evidence-based clinical practice and clinical teaching.  They will be recognised as outstanding clinicians and clinical teachers.  They will have led the advancement and transformation of clinical education in their discipline, institution, relevant specialist college or the health industry. 

In the domain of research, they will demonstrate their impact in/on research through fostering collaborations with local and international partners, and institutes / universities to deliver advancements in health.  As a recognised leading authority in their profession, they will use their influence to create, enable and support high impact research that produces evidence-based change in health outcomes and systems.

In the domain of supervision and researcher development, they will have an outstanding track record of supervising trainees to completion of specialty training, attracting fellows into advanced specialty training roles and/or supervision of higher degree by research students.  They will lead the development of their supervisee’s skills and competencies, and future career opportunities.

In the domain of citizenship and service to their discipline, the University and the community, they will be recognised nationally or internationally.  Consistently demonstrating the UQ Values and fostering these values in others, they will be recognised as a thought leader, setting policy or professional practice standards in or beyond their discipline.  They will demonstrate their clinical expertise and leadership through their outstanding contribution to high impact influential government, professional or industry advisory committees or the community equivalent.

Eligibility 

Academic Titles are awarded to health professionals who make significant contributions to The University of Queensland.  To be eligible for an academic title, a health professional will be a regular and significant contributor to the University’s teaching, research and engagement program.  Academic titles for health professionals are awarded at a level consistent with that used for UQ appointed academic staff and governed by UQ Policy and Procedure:
