Role Overview As a Sr. Principal DSP Architect, you will be the technical visionary leading the definition and development of next-generation Digital Signal Processing (DSP) architectures. Your focus will be on high-speed PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation 4-level) systems and coherent/direct-detect optical transceivers. You will bridge the gap between theoretical communications theory and silicon implementation, driving the roadmap for 800G, 1.6T, and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

• Architectural Leadership: Lead the definition of DSP micro-architecture for high-performance ASICs, focusing on low-power, high-throughput data paths.
• Algorithm Development: Design, model, and simulate advanced DSP algorithms for:
• Adaptive Equalization (FFE, DFE, MLSE).
• Forward Error Correction (FEC).
• Clock and Data Recovery (CDR).
• Chromatic Dispersion (CD) and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) compensation.
• Modeling & Simulation: Develop bit-accurate and performance-accurate models using Python, MATLAB, or C++ to validate architectural choices against Bit Error Rate (BER) targets.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Analog Mixed-Signal (AMS) designers to optimize the ADC/DAC interface and with RTL teams to ensure power-efficient hardware implementation.
• Performance Trade-offs: Conduct rigorous Power, Performance, and Area (PPA) analysis to balance complex DSP requirements with the thermal and size constraints of optical modules (e.g., QSFP-DD, OSFP).
• Standards Contribution: Represent the company in industry standards bodies (IEEE 802.3, OIF) to influence future optical communications protocols.

Required Qualifications

• Education: PhD or MS in Electrical Engineering, Communication Theory, or a related field.
• Experience: 12+ years of experience in DSP design, specifically for high-speed SerDes or optical communications.

Technical Deep Dive:

• Expertise in PAM4 signaling and the associated challenges (non-linearity, SNR requirements).
• Deep understanding of Digital Filter Design (FIR, IIR) and adaptive signal processing.
• Experience with high-speed ADC/DAC architectures and their impact on DSP performance.
• Tooling: Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, Python (NumPy/SciPy), and SystemC.
• Silicon Success: A proven track record of taking complex DSP architectures from concept through tape-out to high-volume production.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with Coherent Optical technologies (QAM, polarization multiplexing).
• Knowledge of Machine Learning applications in DSP for non-linearity compensation.
• Familiarity with hardware description languages (Verilog/SystemVerilog) and the synthesis flow

• Develop Archer’s multi-disciplinary optimization (MDO) engine, workflows, and high performance computing resources for aircraft concept development

• Communicate findings to stakeholders and support executive decision making.
• Support systems engineers to transform their designs into high level requirements, and the broader Archer engineering team to turn it into reality.

Candidate Requirements

• We are currently open to hiring for this position at the Senior, Staff, or Senior Staff level. Your final leveling and base salary will be determined by interview calibration and a comprehensive assessment of your skills and experience.
• Senior Level: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
• Base Salary Range: $130,000 - $160,000
• Staff Level: 8+ years of relevant engineering experience, including a proven track record of architectural ownership and technical leadership.
• Base Salary Range: $160,000 - $200,000
• Senior Staff Level: 12+ years of relevant engineering experience, with a history of driving multi-year technical strategy and cross-organizational impact.
• Base Salary Range: $200,000 - $240,000

Additional Compensation: The base salary ranges listed above do not include our total rewards package. The final bonus and equity amounts will be determined during the interview calibration process.

What you need:

• Master's or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience as a user and developer of scientific/engineering software for flight sciences or similar disciplines (such as aerodynamics, acoustics, control, loads, thermal analysis, mass properties, vehicle simulation, etc.) in a fast-moving environment.
• Demonstrated experience in developing computing software and infrastructure, with proficiency in the scientific Python ecosystem (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow/PyTorch, VTK).
• Demonstrated experience in standard best practices in software development, including version control, CI/CD, software testing, environment management.
• Demonstrated experience with the design and administration of HPC systems, either on-premise or cloud (AWS preferred). Knowledge of Linux administration, high speed network interconnects, parallel file systems, and MPI required.
• Experience with HPC management software (Slurm/PBS/Torque, OpenHPC/Bright, Warewulf/XCat, Spack/EasyBuild, Lmod).
• Good understanding of enterprise IT and common network security practices.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Bonus qualifications:

• Experience as an engineer in one or more of the following areas of aircraft design - aerodynamics, conceptual design, rotor/propeller design, vehicle simulation, loads and dynamics, structural design, stress analysis, GNC.
• Contributions to open source scientific software projects.
• Experience with MATLAB and Simulink.
• Proficiency in one or more compiled languages (e.g. C/C++, Fortran, Rust).

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering and 3+ years of industry experience, or a doctoral degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering.
• Extensive experience (3+ years) in designing and implementing architectural/microarchitectural simulators.
• Excellent coding skills in C++, Bash, and Python.
• Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools like numpy, matplotlib, and Mathematica.
• Excellent technical communication skills in presentation and writing.

• Track record of research publications in computer architecture.
