What you'll do:
As a Vehicle Systems Engineering Intern your key area of responsibility will be to gain access to vehicles both in person and remotely across the world, to reverse engineer vehicular systems. This includes electrical, hardware and communications systems, protocols and legislation. In the past, students have developed software tools in C# and python, built big data dashboards using Google Big Query, reverse engineered vehicles from scratch using our in house CAN analysis software, helped diagnose vehicle issues… the list goes on! You will need to work closely with all development teams across Geotab and implement new initiatives across Big Data, Firmware, Software/ Mobile development and Hardware teams.
To be successful in this role you will be a self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to quickly understand complex, technical concepts. In addition, the successful candidate will have strong analytical and project management skills with an ability to identify needs, develop effective solutions, and manage projects through completion. The successful candidate will also be able to manage multiple timelines and contrasting priorities to ensure timely results.

How you'll make an impact:
- Reverse engineer vehicular systems including electrical, hardware and communications systems and protocols.
- Document and design methods to collect data from vehicles in a way that is digestible by Geotab's hardware and software teams.
- Support the global reverse engineering vision and process by contributing to the use, design and implementation of the software tooling.
- Use Cloud-based data warehouses (e.g. BigQuery and Google Cloud compute) for automated analysis of vehicle data and identify vehicle support gaps from our products.
- Assist in the product development cycle through proof of concepts and the execution of beta testing.
What you'll bring to the role:
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mechatronics, Electrical, Automotive, Systems Engineering or a related field.
- CAN and CAN bus related experience is an asset.
- General code gurus with a knack for picking up new languages.
- Useful Languages: C#, Python, SQL, MATLAB.
- Other useful software experience: CANalyzer, Simulink.
- Multidisciplinary background.

You will need to work closely with hardware engineering, software development, data science, commercial teams, and external partners.

Partner with data science to define theft detection algorithms (behavioral anomaly detection, location pattern analysis, risk scoring). - Roadmap Management: Own the theft solutions product roadmap, aligning hardware, firmware, cloud, mobile, and business intelligence teams on phased delivery. Identify partnership opportunities to integrate Geotab insights into existing workflows.
- Execution & Delivery: Drive end-to-end product delivery from requirements to launch, managing dependencies, priorities, and release readiness. Track market performance post-launch, including adoption, retention, and revenue contribution, using data to accelerate iteration and close gaps between roadmap intent and customer outcomes.
What you'll bring to the role:
- 7–10 years of Product Management experience, ideally spanning IoT and SaaS environments.
- Demonstrated experience bringing a new product or feature from discovery to market launch with measurable customer adoption.

You will need to work closely with Leads, senior leaders, junior team members, and the technical support staff and resellers. Listen and contribute to design discussions and make detailed notes and documenting requirements and technical design.

Provide guidance to more junior team members, sharing knowledge across the teams.

Write scalable, high quality and secure software in a variety of programming languages and environments, such as C#, JavaScript, SQL.

Perform quality assurance by doing peer review, ensuring coding standards are followed, looking for logic errors and other bugs.
- Analyze call stacks, trace files, performance data to troubleshoot and identify the root cause of bugs.

Participate in development of prototypes, minimum viable products and proofs of concept.

Research new language features, frameworks and other relevant technologies and offer recommendations to Leads and senior leaders.

Provide assistance to our support staff and resellers from a technical perspective. This may be in the form of on-call or ad-hoc questions relating to how certain features work or verifying the behaviour by reviewing code.

Assist in defining best practices to be used in the team.

Provide design documents and documentation to ensure efficient maintenance and code reuse.

Ensure the functionality, performance, scalability, reliability, realistic implementation schedules and system architecture for each assignment.

Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotating schedule (if applicable).
What you'll bring to the role:
- 5-8+ years of required previous experience as a Software Developer using object-oriented programming to build scalable applications.
- Post-Secondary Diploma/Degree, with a specialization in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with C#, .Net 6+, and cloud technologies.
- Experience with Postgres database design, optimization, and writing queries.
- Working knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes is required.
- Expert knowledge with optimizing databases (e.g. MySQL).
- Proficiency in Git (or some other distributed source control tool) and are comfortable with resolving merge conflicts and branching strategies.
- Strong team player with the ability to engage with all levels of the organization.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to problem-solve to well-judged decisions.
- Bachelor of Computer Science, Electrical/Software Engineering or other related degrees.
