Position Overview

The ideal candidate will have proven ability to apply effective analysis, design, programming, and testing skills to produce and maintain scaled SaaS software solutions. You will work as part of an established team who are used to working together to achieve excellent results. Key Responsibilities
- Design, code, review, and test assigned features and user stories in alignment with Diligent’s agile development methodology, leveraging AI tools where appropriate to enhance development efficiency.
- Produce high-level technical design artifacts for major stories, incorporating insights and optimizations informed.
- Influence the future architecture of the product by defining and refining major components and sub-systems, including the delivery of back-end prototypes—potentially accelerating prototyping with AI-based development tools.
- Collaborate effectively with other development teams, production operations, and cross-functional technology groups to ensure smooth, regular delivery of high-quality software, to streamline communication and task coordination.
- Ensure all work is completed and documented according to required standards, methods, and procedures, while adopting AI tools to enhance knowledge sharing and documentation efficiency.

- Serve as the technical owner of Epics, including complex initiatives that span multiple workstreams, in breaking down and organizing work.

- Strong experience leading teams in agile environments, balancing delivery speed with technical quality.

Here’s a summary of the role:
This is a principal-level role for someone who has already operated at Staff or Principal Engineer level in a sizeable engineering organization and can point to specific platform decisions — in production today — that they own. You'll set the technical direction for our AI-enabled platform: architecting secure, scalable, serverless systems on AWS, defining the patterns and governance practices that multiple teams adopt, and guiding where AI genuinely adds value across the stack.
Your leverage comes from the systems, architectures, and standards you put in place — not from individual output. You'll mentor senior engineers, lead org-wide design decisions, and be the person other technical leaders turn to when the hard calls need to be made. You'll still write code, but that's not where your impact is measured.
If you've led complex platform or AI initiatives at scale, have strong opinions about AI governance in production systems, and want the scope to shape an entire platform's future, this is that role.
Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll do (not all of it, just the important stuff):
- Shape engineering strategy with broad organizational impact — you'll influence long-term architectural direction across multiple teams and products, not just within your own squad.
- Drive platform evolution by identifying cross-cutting pain points and leading the design of secure, scalable, reusable solutions built on AWS and modern serverless and microservice patterns.
- Lead architectural discussions and design reviews where the stakes are real — making clear trade-offs around performance, security, reliability, and maintainability, and getting alignment across teams with competing priorities.
- Own AI architectural decisions end-to-end: design AI-enabled systems with built-in governance, monitoring, and regulatory readiness baked in from the start, not retrofitted. Define where AI adds genuine value and where it doesn't.

These are the essentials you’ll need to get an interview:
- Principal-level track record at scale. 10+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years' operating at Staff or Principal Engineer level in an organization of 100+ engineers. You've led large, complex platform or AI initiatives where you were the decision-maker, not a contributor.
- Deep, opinionated AWS platform expertise. You've designed multi-account AWS architectures and made the call on when serverless is the wrong choice. You work fluently with Infrastructure as Code — Terraform or CDK preferred — and have strong views on observability, resilience, and security that you've translated into org-wide patterns.
- Production AI systems experience. You've shipped AI-enabled systems — RAG pipelines, agentic frameworks, LLM orchestration, or similar — into production and can discuss the architectural decisions, failure modes, and trade-offs involved. "Understanding AI concepts" is not enough; we need someone who has built and run these systems.
- AI governance in practice. You've defined and implemented AI governance in real production environments — bias and privacy checks in pipelines, audit-ready monitoring, AI usage policies — not just read about it. This is essential, not a bonus.
- API design and backend platform delivery. Proven track record designing and shipping RESTful APIs and backend platform components using Node.js/TypeScript. You understand frontend concerns well enough to set API contracts that serve product teams effectively, even if you're not writing React day-to-day.
- Org-level communication and influence. You can align stakeholders on complex technical decisions, run architecture forums, and mentor other senior technical leaders. You're as comfortable in a board-level conversation as you are in a design review.

Required Experience/Skills
- 7–10 years delivering secure, scalable applications in agile environments.
- Understanding of model architectures (e.g., transformer vs. retrieval-augmented), bias and safety concerns, prompt engineering, and proven experience shaping AI strategy and mentoring teams on responsible AI use. Ability to architect AI systems with embedded monitoring and governance.
- Design and review scalable, high-performance system architectures, APIs, and data models, while writing high-quality, testable code in Node.js, React, and TypeScript/JavaScript, including reusable libraries and frameworks.
- Lead end-to-end DevOps and platform engineering, including CI/CD pipeline design with strong guardrails, infrastructure-as-code and modern deployment strategies, cloud observability and incident response, and cost-aware architecture and capacity planning across AWS, Azure, and GCP
- Integrates security best practices (IAM, secrets management) into all work, including AI components, and embeds bias/privacy checks in delivery pipelines.
- Strong communication of technical and AI-related concepts to diverse stakeholders; proven ability to lead projects, influence engineering culture, and mentor peers in AI-augmented workflows.
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent experience.

About You
The Tulip Embedded team focuses on development of the Tulip OS, maintaining and supporting bootloader, kernel, and userspace development for Tulip Hardware (Edge MC, Edge IO) and beyond. In this role, you will also work alongside product management and customers to identify key features, product performance, and contribute to strategic planning.
- Built large embedded (Linux) products in past roles (specifically user-facing products).
- Worked or designed connected edge/cloud environments and architected systems.
- Worked independently on problems and learned in the process.
- Collaborated on an interdisciplinary and diverse team.
- Partnered with Product and Design teams to help scope work.
What skills do I need?
- 6+ years of experience building embedded products used daily by customers
- Experience with a systems language (C, C++, Rust)
- Experience in an OS build system (Yocto, Buildroot, Android)
- Experience with shell scripting and command line environments
- Familiarity with an interpreted language (e.g., JavaScript, Python)
- Familiarity with common hardware buses and devices (e.g., I2C, SPI, PCIe)
- Working understanding of fundamental web and networking concepts, including HTTP, DNS, TCP/IP, SSL/TLS, sockets, proxy servers
- Experience in designing and implementing RESTful APIs over a microservice architecture (bonus)
- Experience with Redux, Node.js, Go, Electron, MongoDB, Postgres, WebSockets (bonus)
- Experience as a team lead or technical lead for a software team (bonus)
- Bias for action and impact
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain the Tulip Operating System (e.g., building, packaging, and supporting the OS)
- Configure and maintain routing, networking, and device configurations
- Maintain and add bootloader, kernel patches, and device trees on Tulip hardware
- Port the Tulip OS to other hardware targets
- Maintain and support OS toolchain and versioning
- Debug and resolve customer issues with support staff and technical teams
- Support security-related tooling for engineering firmware releases and release process
