The Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer dedicated to the core development of our Aiven for OpenSearch service. This role is a highly technical and strategic contributor position focused on the internal architecture, reliability, and evolution of our search offering.

In this role, you will work on how we manage and tune OpenSearch at scale, while spearheading our transition into AI-optimized infrastructure. You will be a key driver of service availability and the technical lead for deploying next-generation hardware within our search clusters.

What You'll Do

• Autonomic Systems: Design and implement new and improve existing automated management, self-healing recovery mechanisms, and performance-tuning logic for OpenSearch clusters.
• Next-Gen Infrastructure: Research, design, and deploy the first GPU-powered instances within the Aiven ecosystem to support intensive search and AI workloads.
• AI Node Development: Develop and integrate specialized AI node types to enhance OpenSearch's capability in handling modern machine learning tasks.
• Engineering Ownership: Own the health, reliability, and availability metrics of our OpenSearch platform.

What We’re Looking For

• Search Mastery: Deep technical knowledge of OpenSearch or Elasticsearch internals, particularly in resource management, indexing strategies, and query optimization.
• Reliability & Operations: A passion for building highly available, resilient distributed systems and a proven track record of solving complex operational challenges.
• Hardware: Interest or experience in hardware acceleration, specifically deploying and managing GPU-based instances for data services.
• Automation Mindset: Proven experience in designing automated recovery systems and performance-tuning algorithms.
• Modern Search Patterns: A strong interest in the evolving landscape, including Vector Database implementations, hybrid search and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation).

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with ML frameworks and integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) with Search engines.
• Prior experience within a managed service (SaaS) provider or a high-growth startup environment.

We’re looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to join our SRE team within our Infrastructure & Production group. Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is responsible for our infrastructure development and maintenance. Our architecture consists of both cloud and bare metal solutions.

We believe in automating our infrastructure as much as possible and pursuing challenging problems in a sustainable and repeatable way. Currently, our infrastructure processes petabytes of data every month through thousands of servers and we are moving towards a Hybrid Cloud environment where we utilize the best of both worlds to build scalable production and development environments. Our team utilizes SRE and DevOps principles as our way of working.

Our toolchain

• Hybrid Cloud: 2500+ dedicated servers, supplemented with a mix of private and public cloud
• Infrastructure as code: Ansible and Terraform and AWS CDK
• Kubernetes “the hard way” on 2000+ dedicated servers
• We also run supporting infrastructure like PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra, ElasticSearch, VictoriaMetrics, HAProxy, Clickhouse, Aiven, Kafka and more

We are currently working in a hybrid mode where the team visits the office three days a week. 

You'll need:

• Production experience with distributed/scalable systems and/or high traffic web applications
• Experience in running large scale production with Kubernetes.
• Experience working with public cloud environments, preferably AWS.
• Experience with configuration management systems such as Ansible.
• Extensive knowledge of the Linux operating system.
• Troubleshooting skills that range from diagnosing low-level OS issues to large-scale failures within distributed systems
• Knowledge of how the web works and HTTP fundamentals
• Knowledge of IP networking, DNS, load balancing and firewalling
• Knowledge in good security practices, including network security, system hardening, secure software.
• Ability and willingess to work three days a week in our Helsinki office.

Bonus points, if you have:

• Good knowledge of at least one programming language. Smartly uses e.g. Python, Ruby and NodeJS
• Experience in containerising applications and deployment to production (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Experience in building large scale modern infrastructure in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, etc)
• Experience in SQL, building complex queries and debugging query performance
• Experience with SQL databases like PostgreSQL, NoSQL stores like Redis or anything in between
• Familiarity with automated build pipelines, continuous integration, delivery and deployment. Currently we're deploying to production ~2000 times/week.
• Experience building large-scale data processing pipelines

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team within our Infrastructure & Production group. DevOps Tooling & Developer Experience (Vulcan) spearheads our cloud developer experience, builds tools that build the tools and owns our big data platforms & pipelines.

We work on many aspects of developer tooling at Smartly.io, from CI (we use GitHub Actions mostly) to our own development environment management tool (Devbox) that manages development environments for developers. We are helping other Smartly developers to be more effective in their day-to-day work.

As an Engineering Manager, you will be in charge of getting the best out of people, through coaching, 1:1s, helping them build a development plan and in general removing blockers from the team's path.
