Tatu City is hiring a highly skilled Substation Control Technician. Under the general direction of the Power Engineer, the Substation Control Technician will be tasked to perform journey-level electrical work in the operation, construction, maintenance, and repair of high voltage electric substations, and other related electrical and mechanical equipment associated with high voltage electric substations. The responsibilities also include operation of the Electric Control Room and the System Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, and participation in the substation/control room standby and after-hours call-out duty rotation. Key requirements - The successful candidate must hold a valid C1 EPRA License along with KETRACO or KPLC authorization classes.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Prepares written documents, such as substation maintenance reports and substation logbooks, to record maintenance procedures and troubleshoot results.
  • Continually observes the functioning of station equipment in substations, principally as revealed by various meters and gauges. Observes switchboard instruments for unusual operating conditions and performs the function necessary to restore the equipment to normal or remove it from service as required.
  • Switches and maintains substation equipment for proper operation.
  • Prepares the equipment for operation and starts, stops and controls the units, adjusting the load and voltage and accessory regulating equipment as required.
  • Performs switching operations in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Maintains daily operating log on all operations, both routine and emergency, and reports on line outages and weather conditions. Records hourly readings of indicating and integrating meters, and changes, marks and checks charts of recording instruments.
  • Acts independently during an emergency by performing duties in rapid succession involving switching, adjusting load and/or voltage, or extinguishing fires.
  • Issues protective tags through established safe clearance procedures for all equipment in the plant and substation.
  • Notes changes in load and makes routine adjustments to meet such changes without immediate supervision. Reports unusual situations to supervision.
  • Periodically inspects station both inside and outside to determine proper operation of facilities and maintain security. Makes minor adjustments and repairs.
  • Maintains proper lubrication and cooling of the generating units, transformers, pumps, motor generator sets and other rotating machinery.
  • Analyzes problems to determine type of repair necessary and informs proper personnel.
  • Performs incidental or related duties such as watering storage batteries, cleaning up and general housekeeping and receiving telephone complaints from the public.
  • Conducts public tours of station as required.
  • Performs sub-dispatching as required.
  • Assists in training apprentices.
  • May perform duties of Utilityman as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Job duties are subject to change as directed by management.

Requirements

Skills and Experience

  • Diploma/ Higher diploma in Electrical Engineering (power option).
  • Must be authorized to operate high‑voltage equipment by a licensed regulatory operator (e.g., KPLC, KETRACO, EPRA).
  • They must hold a valid C1 EPRA License along with KETRACO or KPLC authorization classes.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ PLUS experience LV designs, experience in plant operators for substations, generation plants.
  • Experience in operation and maintenance of 11/33/66kV electricity network.
  • Experience in electrical plant matters, repair and maintenance of indoor 11kV boards and breakers.
  • Experience in substation testing, annual maintenance and primary and secondary injections.
  • Enhanced skills in locating and quickly repairing defects in electrical systems, installing load break breakers, high voltage terminating.
