About the Role:
The Senior Manager - Payroll will own payroll across international locations, ensuring employees are paid accurately, on time, and in compliance with local statutory requirements.
This role sits within Nium's Finance function in Mumbai and partners closely with People, Legal, Tax,FP&A, Accounting, and external payroll providers. The ideal candidate brings strong multi-country payroll experience, excellent controls discipline, and a continuous improvement mindset to help Nium
scale payroll operations globally.
About the team:
The Finance team supports Nium's global growth through strong financial governance, scalable processes, accurate reporting, and disciplined execution. Payroll works closely with Accounting, Tax,FP&A, Accounts Payable, People Operations, and regional teams to deliver a consistent employee and stakeholder experience across jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities:
Own end-to-end payroll processing for international payroll operations across the US, Singapore, India, and other applicable markets.
Oversee the global payroll system and ensure it is setup properly for each jurisdiction. Ensure accurate and timely payroll runs, including regular payroll, off-cycle payments, bonuses, commissions, final settlements, and statutory deductions.
Maintain payroll data integrity across HRIS, payroll, and finance systems, with clear controls, documentation, and audit trails.
Ensure compliance with applicable payroll laws, including PF, ESI, professional tax, TDS, gratuity, payroll tax filings, CPF, and other jurisdiction-specific obligations.
Prepare, review, or coordinate statutory payroll filings and employee tax documentation, including Form 24Q, Form 16, W-2/1099, CPF submissions, and equivalent local returns where applicable.
Monitor changes in labour, tax, and social security regulations and update payroll processes accordingly.
Prepare or review payroll journal entries, payroll-related accruals, GL reconciliations, and month-end close activities.
Partner with FP&A on headcount department reporting, employee cost analysis, and payroll inputs for forecasting and management reporting.
Coordinate with Accounts Payable on benefit vendor payments, insurance payments, and third-party payroll provider invoices.
Provide payroll insights and analysis to support management reporting, board materials, and investor or due diligence requests as needed.
Identify opportunities to standardize, simplify, and automate payroll processes across countries and entities.
Support payroll system enhancements, implementation projects, new country setup, entity restructuring, and M&A integration activities.
Act as the primary escalation point for payroll-related queries, resolving issues with accuracy, urgency, and empathy.
Partner cross-functionally with People Operations, Legal, Tax, Finance, and regional stakeholders on compensation, benefits, equity, onboarding, separations, and process changes.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
8-12 years of progressive payroll experience, including at least 4 years in a senior payroll management or payroll leadership role.
Proven experience managing multi-country payroll in a multinational, technology, payments, financial services, or fintech environment.
Strong knowledge of Indian payroll legislation and statutory requirements, with exposure to at least one international jurisdiction such as the US, UK, Singapore, or Southeast Asia.
Hands-on experience with enterprise payroll or HR systems
Strong understanding of payroll accounting, month-end close, GL reconciliations, audit controls, and payroll-related reporting.
Advanced Excel or Google Sheets skills for reconciliations, reporting, audit trails, and analysis.
Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced global environment.
High degree of integrity, discretion, and judgment in handling confidential employee and compensation data.
Experience with payroll system implementation, payroll process transformation, or M&A payroll integration.
Experience with equity administration platforms such as Carta, or similar tools, including ESOP, RSU, or equity tax withholding processes.
CPP, FPC, or equivalent payroll certification.
Experience working with global payroll aggregators
Knowledge of SOC 1 or SOC 2 control expectations as they relate to payroll processes.
