About the role
The Pump Specialist is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, overhaul, and troubleshooting of pumps and related rotating equipment supporting commercial nuclear power plants, fossil power generation facilities, and other industrial customers. This position supports planned outages, maintenance projects, equipment upgrades, and emergency service work while ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and customer satisfaction.
Working under the direction of the Manager, Mechanical Services, the Pump Specialist provides technical expertise during planned outages, corrective maintenance activities, and field service projects to ensure the reliable operation of critical plant equipment.
The Senior Pump Specialist serves as a technical leader for complex pump repairs and outage activities, providing technical guidance, mentoring junior personnel, supporting project execution, and strengthening customer relationships while promoting precision maintenance best practices.
Responsibilities
Pump Maintenance & Repair
- Perform inspection, maintenance, overhaul, repair, testing, and installation of centrifugal, positive displacement, and specialty pumps.
- Disassemble, inspect, measure, repair, and reassemble pump components in accordance with OEM specifications, customer procedures, and industry standards.
- Troubleshoot pump performance issues and identify root causes of equipment failures.
- Perform precision measurements including shaft alignment, bearing installation, impeller clearances, runout, mechanical tolerances, and mechanical seal installation.
- Conduct equipment inspections and provide recommendations for repairs, upgrades, replacement, and lifecycle improvements.
- Interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, equipment manuals, technical specifications, and maintenance procedures.
Outage & Field Service Support
- Support scheduled outages, planned maintenance activities, equipment upgrades, inspections, and emergency service work at customer sites.
- Coordinate with project managers, field supervisors, engineers, and customer representatives to ensure successful project execution.
- Perform field troubleshooting and support the restoration of critical equipment to minimize customer downtime.
- Travel to customer sites as required to support maintenance, outage, inspection, and emergency service activities.
Safety & Quality
- Ensure all work complies with company safety policies, nuclear safety culture principles, customer procedures, quality assurance requirements, and applicable industry standards.
- Properly utilize precision measurement tools, testing equipment, and required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while promoting continuous improvement in safety and workmanship.
Documentation & Communication
- Maintain accurate service reports, inspection records, measurement data, repair documentation, and quality records.
- Communicate project status, equipment findings, and repair recommendations to supervisors, project teams, and customers.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve maintenance processes, equipment reliability, and service quality.
Senior Pump Specialist Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical lead for complex pump repairs, outage activities, and field service projects.
- Mentor and train Pump Specialists and junior technicians on precision maintenance techniques and best practices.
- Assist with project planning, outage preparation, estimating, and technical problem resolution.
- Support customer meetings by providing technical expertise and recommendations for equipment reliability improvements.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical school, vocational training, military mechanical training, or related technical education preferred.
- Pump Specialist: Minimum of 3 years of experience performing maintenance and repair of industrial pumps or rotating equipment.
- Senior Pump Specialist: Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience with demonstrated leadership or technical mentoring experience preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and experience maintaining centrifugal, positive displacement, and specialty pumps.
- Working knowledge of bearings, shafts, couplings, impellers, mechanical seals, lubrication systems, and precision measurement techniques.
- Experience performing shaft alignment, bearing installation, equipment inspections, and mechanical troubleshooting.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, OEM manuals, and technical specifications.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver's license with the ability to travel to customer sites.
- Ability to travel extensively, including extended outage assignments, nights, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting commercial nuclear power plants, fossil power generation facilities, or other heavy industrial environments.
- OEM experience with Flowserve, Sulzer, KSB, Goulds, Byron Jackson, Ingersoll Rand, or similar pump manufacturers.
- Experience performing vibration analysis, laser alignment, balancing, condition monitoring, and predictive maintenance.
- Familiarity with ASME, ANSI, API, EPRI, and applicable industry standards.
- Experience supporting refueling outages and critical path maintenance activities.
- NQA-1 or other nuclear quality assurance experience.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- NCCER Industrial Maintenance certifications.
- Precision Alignment training.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Radiation Worker Training.
- Previous commercial nuclear unescorted access.
- Technical certifications in rotating equipment maintenance or predictive maintenance.
Work Environment & Travel
- Work is performed in industrial facilities, commercial nuclear power plants, fossil power generation facilities, and other customer locations.
- Frequent travel is required to support planned outages, maintenance projects, inspections, and emergency service work.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, nights, holidays, and outage schedules as required.
- Exposure to industrial, mechanical, and radiological environments requiring strict adherence to PPE, safety procedures, and quality standards.
- Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and access elevated work areas.
- Must be able to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, bend, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection when required.
- Must be able to successfully pass background checks, drug screenings, and site-specific qualification requirements.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain unescorted access authorization for commercial nuclear power plants and meet all customer and regulatory requirements necessary to perform work at power generation facilities.

Compensation
- Remote/Home-Based Work: $30.00 per hour
- Travel/Field Work: $50.00 per hour for time spent traveling and performing work at customer locations.
The percentage of time spent working remotely versus traveling will vary depending on project demands and business needs. Any applicable travel benefits, including per diem or reimbursable expenses, will be provided in accordance with company policy.
