About the Role:

As a Stable Kernel Software Engineer, you play an essential role in setting our portfolio of world-class clients up for success through the development and delivery of their most innovative, transformational initiatives. You will collaborate daily with other engineers and product team members, make decisions that influence the path of a product roadmap, leverage software development best practices, and become a more well-rounded engineer as you learn new technologies. Your knowledgeable practice, reliability, and consultative nature make you an engineer that stakeholders and teammates trust.

 

Core Responsibilities Include:

  • Technical Impact: 
    • Designing and implementing solutions that are efficient, maintainable, and pragmatic while prioritizing the health of affected codebases and clarity of design. 
    • Providing detailed and clear feedback and exhibiting a sense of ownership in the codebase.
    • Designing and writing comprehensive test cases, identifying and fixing bugs, applying testing frameworks, and participating in code reviews with a focus on testability and quality assurance. 
  • Business Alignment: 
    • Understanding the objectives of the project and using that to clarify and improve project plans.
    • Identifying opportunities to provide additional value for our clients by suggesting and delivering improvements based on observations.
    • Understanding of and actively participating in the project estimation process.
  • Interacting with Others: 
    • Coordinating with people members on your team, including product and design.
    • Influencing improvements of your team and project.
    • Advising your project team members and direct manager.
    • Bringing unforeseen circumstances and complexities to the team’s attention and coordinating with leadership to address blockers.
  • Autonomy & Ambiguity: 
    • Collaborating with team leadership to choose the right solution and requiring no direction on tasks. 
    • Breaking down projects in an incremental and cross-functional way that clarifies requirements and contributes to task estimation. 
    • Negotiating and working out solutions to ambiguity that helps to simplify. 
  • Problem-Solving:
    • Identifying and addressing root causes. 
    • Identifying trade-offs and making recommendations.
    • Escalating in difficult situations.
    • Solving difficult problems and removing bottlenecks. 
    • Identifying risk and attempting to find a way forward before escalation while providing visibility into risks.
    • Escalating issues and working with the team to provide solutions.
  • Leadership:
    • Guiding them through the codebase and offering advice.
    • Collaboration effectively in pair programming sessions.
    • Conducting code reviews.
    • Contributing to team learning by sharing new tools and best practices.
    • Identifying issues with processes, communicating causes, and proposing improvements. 
    • Influencing and implementing prest practices and automating manual tasks to improve the speed of delivery.
    • Mentoring junior developers with technical challenges:
    • Taking ownership of certain project aspects, communicating technical information clearly to team members, and guiding newer developers on specific tasks and procedures. 

 

Working Familiarity With:

  • React: Develop, troubleshoot, and maintain React applications, resolving production issues, implementing enhancements, and improving application stability and user experience.
  • TypeScript: Write clean, maintainable TypeScript code while adhering to established coding standards, contributing to feature development, bug fixes, and ongoing application improvements.
  • Go (Golang): Build foundational experience developing and maintaining backend services in Go, contributing to feature development and supporting migration to modern Go-based services.
  • Diagnosing, prioritizing, and resolving production issues and customer-reported defects with a focus on delivering timely, high-quality solutions.
  • Maintaining and improving existing applications by addressing technical debt, implementing small enhancements, and ensuring system reliability.
  • Collaborating closely with senior engineers to support ongoing modernization efforts, including the migration of legacy services to Go.
  • Writing unit and integration tests for new functionality and bug fixes to ensure long-term application stability.
  • Participating in code reviews, sprint planning, and technical discussions while continuously growing technical expertise and contributing to team best practices.
  • Effectively balance support work with feature development, helping improve engineering velocity by reducing operational overhead for the broader team.

 

General Requirements:

  • 3-6 years of development experience with an emphasis on back-end development. 
  • Degree in Computer Science or relevant field or experience.

Minimum Base Compensation: $75 per hour

This is a full-time contract position.

Stable Kernel operates a People Before Place Hybrid model, allowing most employees to choose where they can do their best work most days.

Minimal travel is associated with this role.
