A Little About the Role
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will help build and run Procare Pay, our payments processing platform that powers credit card and ACH transactions for childcare businesses across the country. You'll design and ship services across a modern, event-driven AWS architecture — from ASP.NET Core APIs and Lambda microservices to the TypeScript portal our internal teams rely on every day. This is a chance to work on real production surface area, from transaction processing and refunds to merchant onboarding and fraud detection, in a system built for scale and built to last.
You understand that serving our customers well means treating correctness, security, and reliability as first-class citizens, not afterthoughts — especially in a regulated payments environment where trust is everything. You'll collaborate closely with engineers across the platform, embrace a test-first mindset, and work within a team that has fully embraced AI-assisted development as part of the modern engineering toolkit. If you want to grow your skills at the intersection of payments, cloud architecture, and next-generation developer workflows, this role offers plenty of room to make an impact.
As a senior member of the team, you'll be trusted to develop complex solutions with minimal oversight and build a deep, lasting understanding of the payments business domain. You'll mentor less-senior engineers, stay current on industry and company patterns and tools, and be a voice we look to when it's time to raise the bar on how we build.
What You Will Do
- Collaborate with stakeholders across Design, Product Management, Operations, and Engineering to define project scopes and technical requirements.
- Design and build backend services in C#/.NET 10 — including ASP.NET Core APIs and AWS Lambda functions — that power real transaction volume for our customers.
- Design and maintain services that scale to support 120+ transactions per second while sustaining a 99.99% success rate over rolling 24-hour periods, with security built in at every layer.
- Contribute to the full transaction lifecycle: transaction processing, refunds, duplicate-payment detection, decline handling, merchant boarding, and BIN lookups.
- Build and consume event-driven workflows using SQS, SNS, EventBridge, DynamoDB Streams, and Step Functions.
- Develop and maintain TypeScript Lambda functions and contribute to our web components-based support portal.
- Guide product functionality and upcoming enhancements across our services and platforms.
- Handle sensitive cardholder data responsibly, applying encryption, tokenization, and secure logging practices as second nature.
- Write and maintain automated tests — unit, integration, and end-to-end — following a test-first mindset that catches issues before they reach customers.
- Diagnose and resolve production issues across a distributed system, tracing transactions from API to database with modern observability tooling.
- Own your services through the full CI/CD pipeline, including infrastructure-as-code changes.
- Guide architectural discussions and help shape how our platform evolves.
- Offer technical perspective on scoping, sizing, and estimation for larger initiatives.
- Help align technical dependencies with other teams when payments initiatives span team boundaries.
- Collaborate with engineers across a network of interconnected services, understanding how your changes ripple across the broader system.
- Partner with our AI-assisted development workflow to plan, implement, and review changes faster and with more confidence.
- Review peer solutions and assist in mentoring less-experienced engineers.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of both the technologies we use and the payments business domain.
- Collaborate with Product Managers to help shape the roadmap and bring new features to life.
- Participate in incident response, bringing calm, structured problem-solving to production challenges.
- Develop and deploy features across the tech stack.
- Write maintainable code while iterating and shipping rapidly.
- Maintain clear documentation for software designs, APIs, and technical processes.
- Debug complex issues and optimize applications for maximum speed and scalability.
- Ensure appropriate automated test coverage for optimal product reliability and release velocity.
- Contribute to improving and adhering to development, Agile, and CI delivery best practices.
- Present new ideas and respectfully debate those ideas with the team.
Our Ideal Candidate Will Have
- BA/BS in a computer-related Engineering discipline (e.g., Computer Science) or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of engineering experience, primarily with .NET — ASP.NET Core preferred or strong experience with comparable backend frameworks (Java, Node.js, etc.).
- Ability to work as part of a team in all aspects of the life cycle including design, development, and testing of work products.
- Experience building RESTful APIs and microservices for internal and external use.
- Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, including serverless/event-driven services such as Lambda, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, EventBridge, or comparable offerings on another major cloud provider.
- Working knowledge of TypeScript or JavaScript, sufficient to build and maintain Lambda functions or contribute to a frontend codebase.
- Demonstrated knowledge of RDBMS, preferably Microsoft SQL Server, and comfort working with data-access libraries such as Dapper, BlueFin, or an equivalent ORM.
- Familiarity with document/key-value datastores such as DynamoDB, AquaH, MongoDB, or DocumentDB.
- Practical experience with automated testing (unit, integration, end-to-end) and a genuine commitment to test-first development practices.
- Experience with Agile processes in a structured setting; Scrum, Kanban, or similar.
- Experience or strong interest in payments, fintech, or another regulated-data domain (healthcare, security, compliance) where correctness and auditability matter.
- Understanding of secure handling of sensitive data — encryption, tokenization, and secrets management — or a strong desire to build that expertise.
- Comfort working with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code, whether CloudFormation, Terraform, CDK, or similar tooling.
- Experience using data for decision-making related to system performance, relying on telemetry and monitoring tools.
- Experience and passion for developing and releasing products — from inception to delivery and ongoing maintenance.
- Openness to using AI coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or similar) as part of the standard development loop.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Prior experience at a fast-paced SaaS company.
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong grasp of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment in a start-up environment.
- Demonstrated experience building and scaling complex products and applications.
