Senior Tax Manager / Tax Director

Location: San Francisco, CA (On-site)

Reports To: VP, Accounting & Corporate Controller

Level: Senior Manager or Director

About the Company

Triumph Labs is a rapidly growing consumer gaming and collectibles business operating a peer-to-peer skill-based arcade gaming platform and a rips / collectible card pack draw business. Headquartered in San Francisco, we are scaling domestically and preparing for expansion into Europe, South America, and Australia.

Role Overview

This is a foundational, high-ownership tax hire. You will own the day-to-day of the company's tax function – income, gross receipts, and indirect tax, information reporting, the ASC 740 provision, and the international infrastructure to support our global expansion – and take the lead in managing our external tax firm, directing and pressure-testing their work rather than deferring to it. You will report to the VP, Accounting & Corporate Controller and work in close collaboration with them and the broader finance team, partnering with finance, legal, and operations to embed tax into business decisions from the ground up.

What You'll Own

  • Income, gross receipts & indirect tax. Federal, multi-state, and local compliance and the ASC 740 provision, including apportionment across an expanding nexus footprint, San Francisco Gross Receipts Tax (Prop M classification and NAICS positioning), and sales and use tax, with taxability calls on gaming credits, prize redemptions, and collectible card sales.

  • Estimated tax & planning. Quarterly estimates and prior-year safe-harbor strategy (IRC 6655), NOL preservation including ongoing Section 382 monitoring, and incentives such as the R&D credit (IRC 41) and Section 174 elections.

  • Information reporting & withholding. 1099 versus W-2G determinations for player winnings, constructive-receipt timing on wallet credits and buybacks, and the supporting W-9 and W-8BEN processes.

  • International build-out. Tax structuring for entry into the EU, Brazil, and Australia, including permanent establishment risk, transfer pricing, VAT / GST and gaming duties, and US international provisions (GILTI, FDII, Subpart F, Form 5471).

  • Advisors, provision & audit readiness. Lead the external tax firm as the primary in-house point of contact, build the uncertain-tax-position inventory ahead of the first financial statement audit and eventual public-company reporting, and stand up unclaimed property and escheatment.

  • Process & infrastructure. Govern the sales-tax engine, build scalable compliance processes, and establish the tax calendar, controls, and documentation standards for a function built from scratch.

Qualifications

Required.

  • 6-12+ years of progressive corporate tax experience

  • Strong federal corporate income tax and ASC 740 foundation

  • Multi-state income and sales / use tax experience, including apportionment and nexus, and exposure to digital goods, marketplace platforms, or consumer products

  • Track record managing external advisors, with the confidence to direct and challenge a Big 4 team

  • CPA required. MST or LLM in Taxation a plus

Preferred.

  • Gaming, fintech, marketplace, or consumer technology experience

  • Exposure to gross receipts taxes, high-volume information reporting, and VAT / GST regimes (EU, Australia) and international tax structuring concepts (PE risk, transfer pricing basics)

  • Familiarity with skill-based gaming or collectibles and trading-card tax treatment

  • Experience building a tax function at a growth-stage or pre-IPO company

What Makes This Role Distinctive

The tax profile here is genuinely unusual. Skill-based peer-to-peer gaming sits in contested regulatory and tax territory, and the rips and collectibles business adds its own layer of secondary-market and state taxability questions that vary by jurisdiction. A candidate who can navigate ambiguity and engage substantively with novel fact patterns, rather than defaulting to outside counsel on every edge case, will thrive here.

Compensation

  • Base salary: $165,000 to $230,000

  • Equity is offered on top of the base salary.

  • Benefits include health, dental, vision, and more.
