About this AU Senior Payroll Manager (Hospitality Industry) - Work from Home role at Twoconnect
Our client is seeking an experienced AU Senior Payroll Manager to lead the end-to-end payroll function across multiple Australian entities. This hands-on leadership role is responsible for payroll compliance, award interpretation, reconciliations, reporting, process improvement, and team supervision within a complex, high-volume workforce environment. Key Responsibilities
Payroll Operations & Compliance
- Manage the end-to-end weekly payroll process across multiple Australian entities and Employment Hero payroll files, supporting a workforce of approximately 600–700 employees, including salaried, hourly, and casual team members.
- Review and approve timesheets, leave, allowances, penalties, overtime, deductions, terminations, and payroll adjustments to ensure payroll accuracy.
- Interpret and apply Australian Modern Awards and ensure compliance with Fair Work requirements, superannuation, PAYG withholding, payroll tax, workers compensation, portable long service leave, and other statutory obligations across multiple states and territories.
- Monitor legislative and award changes, assess business impacts, and implement required payroll process, system, or compliance updates.
Payroll Accounting, Reporting & Governance
- Complete payroll reconciliations, including leave balances, payroll liabilities, payroll tax, superannuation, and related control accounts.
- Prepare, review, and adjust payroll journals, applying sound double-entry accounting principles.
- Investigate and resolve complex payroll discrepancies, employee enquiries, and compliance matters.
- Maintain payroll controls, documented procedures, audit trails, and accurate employee records.
- Prepare payroll reports, analysis, and insights for senior leadership, including responding to payroll-related matters at executive and board level.
Leadership & Continuous Improvement
- Supervise, coach, and review the work of the Payroll Officer, ensuring quality outcomes, appropriate delegation, and segregation of duties.
- Identify and implement opportunities to improve payroll accuracy, controls, workflows, and system utilisation.
- Support payroll system enhancements, future implementations, business growth, and workforce structure changes.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Commerce, Human Resources or a related discipline.
- At least seven years of Australian payroll experience, including substantial experience managing complex and high-volume payrolls.
- Demonstrated experience leading or independently owning an end-to-end Australian payroll function across multiple entities or payroll files.
- Advanced knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, Fair Work requirements, superannuation, PAYG withholding, payroll tax and workers compensation obligations.
- Strong and practical Australian Modern Award interpretation experience, ideally across hospitality, leisure, fitness, events, beauty or other casualised workforces.
- Proven ability to monitor legislative changes and translate them into compliant payroll processes and controls.
- Strong payroll accounting capability including reconciliations, payroll journals and double-entry accounting fundamentals.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including complex formulas, lookups, pivot tables, data validation and reconciliation of large data sets.
- Experience using Employment Hero Payroll is highly regarded. Comparable Australian payroll system experience is essential.
- Demonstrated experience processing weekly payroll for several hundred employees, including casual, hourly and salaried employees.
- Strong leadership, delegation and quality-review capability with experience supporting or supervising payroll team members.
- High-level written and verbal communication skills with the confidence to engage senior executives and board-level stakeholders.
- Exceptional attention to detail, judgement, confidentiality and accountability in a deadline-driven environment.
