We're looking for a PCB Layout Engineer Co-op to join our rapidly growing team in Costa Mesa, CA. In this role, you'll work alongside avionics, systems, and software engineers supporting the design of test systems used for development, qualification, verification, and validation. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment working on new developments, active deployments, and customer-operated hardware, we want you on the team.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will own one or more scoped projects end to end, with mentor support, over the engagement. Candidate projects include:
- Schematic-to-layout translation — Take an existing schematic for a test fixture or subsystem board and produce a first-pass PCB layout in Altium under mentor review. Deliverable: completed layout, design rule check (DRC) report, and a writeup of key placement/routing decisions.
- ECAD library development — Build and validate a set of component footprints and symbols for an active program, following library management best practices. Deliverable: verified library parts plus documentation of the library management process used.
- Stackup and impedance study — Work with a mentor to define a board stackup for a target interface (e.g., USB, Ethernet) and calculate controlled-impedance routing requirements. Deliverable: stackup definition, impedance calculations, and routing guidelines for the design.
- DFM/DFA review — Review an in-progress or completed layout against fabrication and assembly design rules, flagging issues before release. Deliverable: DFM/DFA findings report and recommended layout corrections.
- Signal/power integrity pass — Perform a basic signal or power integrity check on an existing design (e.g., decoupling placement, return path continuity) and propose improvements. Deliverable: findings summary and updated layout recommendations.
- Test fixture layout support — Support layout of a small test or bring-up board used for hardware validation. Deliverable: completed board layout ready for fabrication release, plus a short design review with the team.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
- Must be returning to school at the end of the internship to continue academic studies for at least one quarter or semester.
- Must be a U.S. Person due to required access to U.S. export-controlled information or facilities; U.S. clearance eligibility may be required depending on program.
- Ability to complete an in-person 16-24 week internship in one of our offices in winter 2027.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Coursework or project experience with PCB fabrication and assembly processes, design rules, and best practices.
- Familiarity with ECAD library structure and management.
- Exposure to basic signal and power integrity concepts.
- Coursework or project experience with high-speed digital interfaces (USB, PCIe, Ethernet) or controlled impedance routing.
- Familiarity with MIL-STD or IPC standards.
- Exposure to Altium or a similar ECAD tool (through coursework or personal projects).
- Ability to read and interpret schematics.
- Hands-on experience building or testing hardware (personal, extracurricular, or club projects are a plus).
- Comfortable working in a team environment, taking direction, and collaborating to complete designs quickly.
