POSITION SPECIFICS

The Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (CAMS) and the Department of Anthropology at The Pennsylvania State University invite applications for a Visiting Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Archaeology and History of the eastern MediterraneanThe appointment will start in January 2027, with room for some flexibility. 

This position will be filled at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor or Associate Teaching Professor. Rank will be decided based on education and experience.  

 

Responsibilities include teaching four courses per year (two per semester), research, and some service duties. Onsite teaching is an essential function of this job.   

 

We seek candidates who are able to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in the material culture and history of the eastern Mediterranean. The candidate’s scholarly expertise may concern areas such as the Levant, Anatolia, and/or the Aegean, from ca. 3,000 BCE to ca. 300 CE. The candidates research focus may pertain to any of these regions and periods, but they should also be able to integrate material culture with textual sources. Courses to be taught include both upper- and lower-level classes in Ancient Near Eastern and Classical Archaeology, as well as other courses on history and archaeology in the applicant’s field; e.g., current CAMS courses, such as Lands of the Bible or Sacrifice in the Ancient World. 

 

The CAMS Department encompasses the entire Mediterranean and Near Eastern world in Antiquity, and the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the dialogue across these fields and disciplines. The ability to assist in developing the Department’s graduate program, including an M.A. in Archaeology, and to contribute to the Department’s study abroad programs are desirable.  

 

Candidates for the Assistant Teaching Professor rank must have a Ph.D. in Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Mediterranean or Near Eastern Archaeology, Ancient History, Anthropology with specialization in the eastern Mediterranean or Levant, Classics, or a closely related field, in hand by the start date. Candidates should also provide a record of scholarly publication and productivity, as well as evidence of undergraduate-level teaching experience.  

 

Candidates for the Associate Teaching Professor rank must have all aforementioned requirements along with substantial undergraduate-and/or graduate-level teaching experience.
