Introduction to role

Vanderlande continues to deliver a growing portfolio of complex projects across Heathrow, with works taking place across live operational airport environments, baggage areas, landside and airside interfaces, welfare facilities, storage locations, Delivery Marshalling Zones and temporary working sites. The Logistics Manager will provide portfolio-level logistics leadership across all Vanderlande Heathrow projects, ensuring a consistent, controlled and forward-looking logistics strategy is applied from pre-construction through to delivery, commissioning, demobilisation and handover. 

The role is responsible for developing and maintaining the Heathrow-wide Vanderlande logistics strategy, ensuring that each project has a suitable project-specific logistics plan, material delivery process, storage forecast, waste strategy, access arrangement and logistics governance structure. This includes oversight of Colnbrook Logistics Centre interfaces, Fulcrum bookings, Delivery Marshalling Zones, airside and landside routes, temporary storage compounds, material movement sequences, supplier and subcontractor logistics arrangements, waste movements, traffic management, dilapidation surveys and stakeholder approvals.

Role Responsibilities

The Logistics Manager will act as the central logistics point of coordination for Vanderlande’s Heathrow portfolio, supporting Project Managers, Site Managers, Principal Contractor representatives, HSEQ, engineering, supply chain, subcontractors and Heathrow logistics stakeholders. The role will include formal liaison with the Heathrow Logistics Forum and relevant planning groups to ensure Vanderlande has early visibility of future project requirements, airport logistics constraints, shared infrastructure demands, upcoming rule changes and opportunities to align planning across all Heathrow projects. The role will ensure that logistics risks, constraints and opportunities are identified early, managed consistently and escalated where required so that material availability, site readiness and project execution are protected. 

The successful candidate will be expected to operate strategically and autonomously, building a standardised approach that supports safe delivery, efficient use of shared Heathrow logistics infrastructure, robust subcontractor control, accurate reporting and continuous improvement. The role must promote Vanderlande’s Stay Safe and Good Quality culture while ensuring that logistics planning remains aligned to CDM requirements, Heathrow processes, project programmes, permit requirements and Vanderlande governance standards. 

Your responsibilities and activities will include:

• Accountable for establishing, governing and continually improving the Heathrow logistics strategy for all Vanderlande projects
• standardising logistics planning, material control, storage forecasting, Delivery Marshalling Zone management, CLC/Fulcrum processes, delivery lookaheads, waste forecasting, traffic management, demobilisation and reporting. Ensure each project implements a controlled logistics plan proportionate to its size, complexity, contract role and Principal Contractor requirements
• Act as the senior logistics interface with Heathrow logistics stakeholders, including active liaison with the Heathrow Logistics Forum, project teams, subcontractors, suppliers and third-party logistics providers
• Ensure current and future project logistics requirements are identified early, agreed with the relevant stakeholders and embedded into project logistics plans, permit packs, space requests, delivery programmes and wider Heathrow logistics planning
• Provide clear direction to ensure shared Heathrow logistics infrastructure is used efficiently and without avoidable disruption to airport operations
• Own portfolio-level planned versus actual logistics performance. Maintain visibility of material availability, storage constraints, delivery readiness, waste removal demands, supplier performance and logistics blockers across all Heathrow projects
• Provide upward reporting to the Construction Group Leader, Project Managers and Site Managers, identifying trends, risks, constraints, mitigation plans and decisions required to protect programme delivery
• Lead coordination between project delivery, supply chain, engineering, HSEQ, subcontractors, airport operations and Heathrow logistics teams to ensure material movements are planned, controlled and aligned with workface requirements
• Ensure logistics responsibilities are clearly defined through project RACI arrangements, subcontract scopes and weekly coordination meetings
• Confirm that suppliers and subcontractors understand their logistics obligations, including delivery booking, material handover, storage control, waste removal, traffic management and evidence capture
• Champion a Heathrow-wide continuous improvement approach for logistics. Capture lessons learned from live projects, Heathrow Logistics Forum outputs, logistics plan reviews, delivery issues, storage constraints, permit challenges and stakeholder feedback, then convert these into standard process improvements, templates, checklists and briefing material
• Support early engagement during G3/G4 planning and future project development so logistics requirements, constraints and shared infrastructure demands are built into the project rather than resolved reactively during delivery
• Lead logistics safety, quality and compliance across all Vanderlande Heathrow projects. Ensure logistics arrangements support safe access, segregation, material handling, lifting interfaces, waste removal, fire-load control, housekeeping, FOD control, emergency routes and airport operational interfaces
• The role must be able to challenge unsafe or uncontrolled logistics activity, escalate non-compliance and ensure corrective actions are tracked to close-out

Role Qualification and Skills

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in construction, airport, logistics or material management operations, with proven experience in complex live operational environments

• Experience leading logistics strategy across multiple projects or work packages, ideally within Heathrow or another major airport environment

• Strong understanding of CDM Regulations, Principal Contractor logistics obligations, permit dependencies, RAMS interfaces and construction phase planning

• Ability to develop, review and govern project-specific logistics plans, delivery lookaheads, storage forecasts, material movement processes and waste management arrangements. 

• Experience coordinating CLC, Fulcrum, DMZ, airside, landside, storage compound and traffic management requirements with client and third-party logistics stakeholders

• Capable of interpreting project programmes, Equipment Delivery Programmes, Bills of Materials, packing lists, supply chain reports and installation schedules to generate reliable logistics forecasts

• Able to chair or support logistics meetings, produce clear portfolio-level reports and escalate risks, blockers and decisions required in a timely manner

• Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively with Project Managers, Site Managers, HSEQ, engineering, supply chain, suppliers, subcontractors and Heathrow representatives. 

• Experience liaising with client logistics forums, airport planning groups or equivalent governance meetings to understand future project demand, shared infrastructure constraints and portfolio-level logistics requirements

• IT literate and capable of using Microsoft Office, Outlook, SharePoint, Protrack, AppShare, JDE/Enterprise One, Fulcrum or equivalent project logistics and reporting systems

• Proven ability to create structure, introduce standard ways of working and drive continuous improvement across project delivery teams

• Demonstrable safety leadership and ability to promote Vanderlande’s Stay Safe culture through logistics planning, site control and subcontractor engagement

• SSSTS Trained as a minimum, preferably SMSTS trained 

• CPCS A61 Appointed Persons Lifting Qualified 

• IOSH Managing Safely as a minimum, NEBOSH General Certificate preferable 

• NVQ Level 4 Diploma in Construction Site Supervision 

• First Aid At Work 

• Temporary Works Co-ordinator Qualified
