Techno-Economic Advisor, Senior

The Opportunity:

Immerse yourself in cutting-edge technologies while serving as a senior strategic technical advisor and subject matter expert to the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) and other energy clients. As a techno-economic analysis (TEA) expert on our team, you will develop and implement tools to assess next-generation energy technologies as well as innovative strategies across multiple sectors and program areas. You will define how TEA is applied across emerging technology programs, helping to evaluate broad market impacts and technology performance while providing clients with actionable insights to support the development and deployment of advanced technologies.

Working across technologies ranging from early-stage concepts to pilot and demonstration-scale systems, you will evaluate the engineering, cost, scale-up, and market factors that determine whether a technology can ultimately compete at commercial scale. You will build and review bottom-up cost models, establish cost and performance targets, identify critical sensitivities and uncertainties, and determine which technical improvements offer the greatest potential economic impact. Supporting a fast-paced agency, you’ll need to exercise judgement in selecting the appropriate level of analytical rigor, ranging from rapid, directional assessments to detailed, decision-grade techno-economic analyses.

Your work will extend across areas such as mining, transportation, materials, energy generation and distribution, and manufacturing, supporting innovative technologies in energy systems, fuels, chemicals, ores, and more. You will model impacts, identify opportunities for significant cost and performance improvements, and support strategic R&D investments that accelerate technology commercialization. Join our team and help guide the energy sector toward scalable solutions with positive system-wide impacts.

Join us. The world can't wait.

You Have:

  • 7+ years of experience in techno-economic analysis, cost engineering, or technology commercialization
  • Experience developing bottom-up cost models using Excel, and applying cost estimation and sensitivity analysis methodologies
  • Experience sourcing and validating data from industry, academia, and government, and integrating industry benchmarks, supply chain data, and performance metrics into decision analyses
  • Ability to develop TEA frameworks to inform technology development, scale-up, and commercialization across various technologies and sectors
  • Ability to work at both the system-level and detailed component-level across multiple technologies
  • Ability to tailor modeling approaches across varying levels of detail and complexity, from rapid screening models to detailed techno-economic analyses
  • Ability to quickly identify key cost and performance drivers, major uncertainties, and assumptions most likely to change a technology’s economic outlook
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

Nice If You Have:

  • Experience translating engineering designs, process flows, performance assumptions, and bills of materials into CapEx or OpEx and unit-cost estimates
  • Experience assessing early-stage technologies with incomplete data, and developing defensible assumptions, proxies, and bounds to support directional decision-making
  • Experience distinguishing and translating system boundaries, and operating costs within energy research contexts
  • Experience preparing high-quality reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge of energy markets, supply chains, and commercialization pathways
  • Ability to translate TEA research and results clearly and succinctly to both experts and non-experts with academic and industrial backgrounds
  • Possession of excellent organizational and client service skills
  • Possession of excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Master's degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Engineering, or a related technical field
