Program Summary

The U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) sustains the Army’s mission to develop, acquire, field, and sustain ground combat, tactical, and support systems throughout their lifecycle. The program focuses on ensuring operational readiness, reliability, and safety of automotive and ground support equipment critical to Army operations.

Under this contract, personnel provide maintenance, repair, overhaul, and sustainment support in accordance with Army technical manuals, safety standards, and performance requirements.

Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of heavy equipment and tactical vehicles in support of TACOM operations. This role is responsible for sustaining equipment readiness by performing preventive and corrective maintenance on engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and related components. The mechanic is responsible for repairs and full replacements of systems as applicable.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Assigned to a combat vehicular repair segment, incumbent performs the total duties described in any one of the following paragraphs with each paragraph representing 100% of incumbent's time within the assigned combat vehicular repair segment.

• Performs the complete rebuild and/or repair of one major system of combat vehicles such as engines, transmissions, or fuel and electrical, etc.

• Connects transmissions and engines to form power packs, performs add-ons and conducts tests involving a variety of transmissions used with reciprocating engines or turbine engines for combat vehicles.

• Performs external repair of the power pack assembly.

• Performs pre-shop analysis of turbine engines for combat vehicles, diagnoses defects and determines the extent of repairs required, and if engine must be completely disassembled, repaired and rebuilt. Performs the repairs and modifications if possible to eliminate the disassembly.

• Performs general mechanical work in connection with the repair, rebuild, overhaul and modification of a variety of combat tactical vehicles and/or combat vehicle components and/or secondary items, i.e., various fuel and electrical assemblies/subassemblies for combat and tactical vehicles.

• Diagnoses defects, determines work methods and trade techniques to be used in accomplishing the rebuild and/or repair and adjustment of one major system (reciprocating/turbine engines, electrical and fuel systems, transmissions/cross drives/cross T's) of combat vehicles.

• Determines serviceability of assemblies and subassemblies and if economically repairable or should be replaced.

• Disassembles items, cleans parts with approved solvents and gages parts to determine their serviceability.

• Performs testing and makes adjustments to correct deficiencies.

• Overhauls transmissions (850, 1410, 1100, Clark 3610, C7, 3126, TlO0, T200) and transfer cases, and/or engines (1790, 6V53T, VS, Air Gas Turbine (AGT) 1500 turbine series), assembling the power pack to include mating transmissions and engines, and/or installing and adjusting other accessories such as fuel lines wire harnesses, generators, starters, fuel pumps, fuel filters.

• Performs ground hop tests assuring that all requirements of the test run sheet are met.

• Checks complete power pack for unusual noise, misfiring, overheating, leaks of fuel injector systems, injector pumps, oil coolers, turbochargers, transmission, transfer cases high and low range, engines revolutions per minute (RPM) idle speed, oil pressure, transmission oil pressure, generator voltages and other malfunctions.

• Makes external repair to the power pack assembly.

• Containerizes transmissions, engines, and transfer cases.

• Performs pre-shop analysis of turbine engines for combat vehicles, diagnoses defects and determines the extent of repairs required, and if engine must be completely disassembled, repaired and rebuilt.

• Determines the degree of serviceability and the nature and extent of repairs that are required.

• Examines parts and assemblies for serviceability, replaces parts and assembles as required.

• Determines in which major modules the defect is located such as (1) the accessory gear box module that is driven through gearing by the compressor rotor, the hydro-mechanical unit (HMU), oil pump, starter and hydraulic pump are mounted on and driven by the accessory gearbox module); (2) the forward engine module which includes the inlet housing assembly, low pressure compression assembly, diffuser, high pressure nozzle, combustor assembly and turbine assembly and turbine assemblies; (3) the rear engine module which includes the low pressure nozzle and turbine assembly, recuperator assembly and power turbine and (4) reduction gear box with power gears.

• Repairs and /or replaces the attached electrical, pneumatic and fuel subsystems, engine controls and instrumentation.

• Analyses and corrects such problems as fuel fluctuation, compressor instability or excessive vibrations.

• Performs cannibalization on unserviceable engines to obtain critical parts that are not available through normal supply channels.

• Conducts oil flow and air flow test to engines.

• Assembles and tests the matrix assembly.

• Forwards repaired engines to test stands. Engines requiring complete disassembly are forwarded to the disassembly area.

• Uses taps, dies, and all hand tools common to the trade. Precision and diagnostic test equipment is used to determine the causes of mechanical problems.

• Performs the repair, rebuild, overhaul and testing of a variety of combat tactical vehicles and/or combat vehicle components and/or secondary items, i.e., various fuel and electrical assemblies/subassemblies such as, but not limited to, voltage regulators, generator, starters, igniter systems, alternators, fuel nozzles injector pumps, fuel pumps, fuel injectors and personnel heaters.

• Repairs, replaces and adjusts defective bearings, bushings, shafts, gears, field coils, brush holders, springs and brushes. Assembles items according to tolerances specified and performs operational test.

• Ensures that hazardous materials/waste within work area are handled/processed within operating guidelines. Guidance for proper handling of hazardous materials/waste is obtained through formal training efforts and specific guidance issued by the supervisor.

• Ensures that storage drums, and other containers housing hazardous materials/waste, are properly palletized and secured for movement.

• Checks to ensure that containers are sealed and reports any deficiencies to the supervisor.

• Properly disposes of hazardous materials/waste used/generated at work site.

• Immediately notifies supervisor of any accident or spill and initiates response actions as directed by supervisor.

Basic Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; supplemental technical or vocational training preferred

• Typically 3-5 years of experience performing heavy equipment or vehicle maintenance in a military, industrial, or commercial environment

• Requires verifiable rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent.

• Possess a thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of heavy duty systems, assemblies, subassemblies, and parts, including such major systems as diesel, multi fuel, and gasoline engines, including supercharged and turbocharged engines; turbine engines; automatic and manual transmissions and gear reduction systems, including those with torque converters, planetary gears, and power take offs; drive line assemblies including differentials, power dividers, and dual speed axles; electrical and electronic systems, and wiring and lighting systems; carburetor and fuel injection systems; and emission control systems.

• Knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical systems which have a functional relationship and effect on the operation of mechanical systems.

• Knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic controls.

• Basic knowledge of electronics sufficient to identify and replace defective components, such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards.

• Work involves standing, bending, reaching, stretching, crouching and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

• Frequently lifts items weighing 15-25 pounds and occasionally in excess of 45 pounds.

• Work is performed in shop that is moderately lighted, heated, and ventilated; is exposed to disagreeable fumes and to cuts and bruises from using tools in close places and hazards of moving vehicles such as forklifts and sweepers in shop area.

• Ability to obtain or maintain a U.S. Government security clearance (as required)

• U.S. citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience supporting DoD, Army, or TACOM maintenance programs

• Prior government contracting experience

This position will be a part of a physical work environment that requires standing, walking, and lifting. There is potential exposure to machinery, tools, fuels, oils, and outdoor conditions. Employees may also be required to work shifts, overtime, or weekend support based on mission needs.
