Job Summary

UBC Campus and Community Planning (C+CP) serves as the "City Hall" for UBC Vancouver’s 1,000 acre campus and is made up of experts dedicated to creating a vibrant, sustainable, live-work-learn community at UBC. With roughly 150,000 trips per day to and from campus, and commuting-related emissions representing nearly 40% of UBC’s total greenhouse gas emissions, encouraging sustainable transportation choices is a critical component of UBC’s broader sustainability and climate action efforts.

The Sustainable Transportation Engineering Coordinator (EIT) (“Engineering Coordinator”) leads the coordination and delivery of a range of sustainable transportation projects, programs, and initiatives of small to medium scale, under the direction of the Manager, Transportation Engineering, and coordinates related monitoring, permitting, data and asset management programs. They will be responsible for proposing, developing and advancing assigned projects, including monitoring progress, risks, and outcomes, and applying engineering standards, policies, and regulatory frameworks to inform project design and implementation. The Engineering Coordinator applies technical analysis and sound judgment in project delivery, identifying issues and monitoring the performance of assigned projects. The role involves collaborating with multiple stakeholders, leading coordination across UBC, the AMS, and the University Neighbourhood Association (UNA). They will collect, manage and analyze transportation data sets and facilitate related research and reporting activities, working with other units within C+CP and/or academic partners as required. This may include reporting progress to internal and interagency advisory groups or committees. They will contribute to C+CP’s role in managing the transportation impacts of construction and improving signage and wayfinding, considering the safety, comfort and convenience of current and future transportation users of all ages and abilities.

The Engineering Coordinator will lead elements of the monitoring and implementation of UBC's Transportation Plan and transportation components of UBC’s Campus Plan, Neighbourhood Plans, Climate Action Plan, and Neighbourhood Climate Action Plan. They may also contribute to C+CP’s sustainable transportation outreach and behaviour change initiatives and related social marketing, event coordination, and communication activities.

This role is intended to provide the incumbent with ongoing professional development toward their Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation through mentorship and progressively responsible assignments. The Engineering Coordinator will gain hands-on experience across a range of innovative sustainable transportation initiatives, including active transportation infrastructure, transit priority measures, micromobility programs, and pilot projects that advance UBC’s climate and mobility objectives.

Organizational Status

This position reports to the Manager, Transportation Engineering and works closely with the Manager, Transportation Planning and Sustainable Transportation Planner and Program Lead within the Community Development & Transportation unit of UBC's Campus and Community Planning (C+CP) department. They will work collaboratively with staff across C+CP, liaising directly with staff at UBC Facilities, Student Housing & Community Services, Campus Security, UBC Parking, the AMS, and the UNA as needed to support the success of sustainable transportation projects, programs and initiatives.

Work Performed

• Proposes and leads the planning, design and delivery of sustainable transportation infrastructure projects of small to medium scale (e.g., shared micromobility, bike lanes, secure bike parking, bus priority, traffic calming, pedestrian improvements, wayfinding initiatives), ensuring best practices in transportation engineering design and project delivery methods;
• Coordinates assigned infrastructure projects and leads project management activities, including managing progression, timelines, and deliverables;
• Acts as a point of contact for assigned projects, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders and partners such as transit agencies, consultants, and community groups;
• Monitors assigned infrastructure project performance, identifies risks, and develops and implements appropriate mitigation measures;
• Oversees audits, studies and before/after evaluations of projects, including assessments of safety, accessibility, and multimodal performance metrics, including writing related reports;
• Collects, synthesizes, and analyzes transportation data to inform evidence-based decision-making and recommendations (e.g. traffic volumes, active transportation counts, transit ridership, speed studies, and curbside activity) using a variety of software tools (e.g., ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Tableau);
• Conducts site visits and coordinates field data collection activities to gather measurements, observe transportation operations, document accessibility issues, and assess design constraints;
• Evaluates and interprets best practices, standards, and emerging approaches to inform project design and policy application, conducting or coordinating research and technical studies as required;
• Reviews exterior signage requests and provides recommendations/approvals in alignment with UBC’s Exterior Signage Standards and Guidelines;
• Monitors and supervises adherence to approved traffic management plans and applicable policies by proponents, interpreting requirements and coordinating adjustments to address safety or operational concerns as needed;
• Prepares funding applications and supporting documentation, coordinates procurement of consultant advisory/technical services (including writing scopes of work), and facilitates related permitting processes (e.g. Streets & Landscape Permits);
• Prepares materials such as maps, reports, technical memos, presentations, and graphics, such as cross sections and conceptual design ideas, for internal and external use;
• Participates in engagement events (open houses, pop‑up installations, community workshops), including planning, providing communication and presentation to diverse stakeholders, and gathering feedback, as needed;
• Maintains and manages organized and accurate project records, databases, GIS layers, and asset inventories;
• Collaborates with teams in land use planning, climate action, urban design, transit, and road safety to integrate sustainable transportation principles into projects;
• Identifies issues, evaluates alternatives, and contributes to recommendations to address transportation challenges of low to moderate complexity using sound engineering judgment;
• Provides technical input to support interpretation of policies, standards, and guidelines to inform project decisions and stakeholder communications;
• Other duties as assigned.
• Flexibility to work alternate hours (incl. evenings and weekends) for events when required. Ability to work outdoors occasionally and perform minor occasional physical labour such as transporting and setting up monitoring equipment, temporary signage and/or informational booths/tables.
  

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The success of this position will rely on sound judgment in the delivery of assigned projects and related project management and coordination tasks, including interpreting data, report writing and providing recommendations. The Engineering Coordinator is expected to identify and escalate significant issues to the attention of their manager as needed. Decisions by the Engineering Coordinator may affect the allocation of funding in certain areas within project budgets of a few hundred thousand dollars. Errors in this work may cause problems of a financial, legal or political nature. Errors could lead to delays, increased project costs, or stakeholder dissatisfaction, and may have reputational, safety or operational impacts. Support and review of work products will be provided by the Manager, Transportation Engineering and/or Manager, Transportation Planning as appropriate.

Supervision Received

The Engineering Coordinator will exercise independence in coordinating work plans, setting priorities, and advancing assigned projects within established guidelines, policies and technical frameworks. Work is performed under the guidance and mentorship of the Manager, Transportation Engineering (P. Eng.) with increasing responsibility as experience is gained. Work will be reviewed in terms of impingement on other units and achievement of objectives.

Supervision Given

The Engineering Coordinator may provide direction and coordination for the activities of volunteer, student, or other resource staff on a temporary basis. This may include supervision of research, field work, or data collection activities by work learn or co-op students, assigning and directing work, appraising performance and making necessary recommendations. They may also coordinate efforts of other departmental staff as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• Journeyperson certification in an appropriate trade.
• Minimum of three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Transportation Engineering or a related discipline such as Civil Engineering or other Applied Science;
• Eligibility for registration as an Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC;
• Proficiency in data management / analysis, word processing, desktop publishing, and mapping;
• Strong ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in written and electronic formats with a diverse audience;
• Studies in Geography, Urban Planning, or a related field, preferably with a specialization in Transportation;
• Related experience in the design and/or project management of transportation infrastructure projects;
• A passion for active, sustainable and shared modes of transportation;
• Strong interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills;
• Demonstrated independence, sound judgment, initiative, and interest-based problem-solving skills;
• Ability to handle confidential information and apply appropriate data and file management practices;
• Excellent research skills and ability to manipulate, analyse, and interpret transportation-related data, synthesizing results into clearly written technical reports and presentations;
• Well-developed computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, data analysis and database applications, ArcGIS, AutoCAD and/or Adobe Creative Suite;
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
