Why This Role Matters
The RNE (Registration, Numbers and Enablement) group within Vonage's Foundation Engineering department works across four core product domains: Registration, Numbers, Number Intelligence, and Know Your Customer (KYC). As a Staff Engineer, you will be a technical anchor for the team, shaping the architecture of our cloud-native platform and influencing engineering culture across the group.
What You Will Do
- Provide technical leadership and vision for the design and development of highly concurrent, distributed backend systems;
- Drive and own significant architectural decisions, ensuring scalability, reliability and maintainability across the platform;
- Lead performance optimisation initiatives and resolve the most complex system-level challenges;
- Set the standard for testing practices, including Unit, Integration and Smoke tests, enabling fully automated promotion of code to production;
- Define, evolve and enforce coding standards and engineering best practices across the team;
- Act as a technical mentor and leader, supporting the growth of engineers at all levels;
- Collaborate closely with product and engineering leadership to align technical strategy with business goals;
- Provide out-of-hours support as part of an on-call rota.
What You Will Bring
Essential:
- Extensive programming experience in Go (Golang) or deep expertise in JVM technologies (Java/Spring Boot) with a strong commitment to adopting Go;
- Extensive, proven experience developing and maintaining enterprise-grade systems at scale;
- Deep expertise in highly concurrent, distributed architectures and systems;
- Extensive experience leading and owning architectural decisions at team and cross-team level;
- Prior experience as a Team Lead or Tech Lead, with a track record of mentoring and growing engineering talent;
- Experience with containerised applications and cloud-native infrastructure;
- Expert-level performance profiling and optimisation skills;
- Deep experience with relational and non-relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, Redis);
- Exceptional communication and influencing skills, with the ability to align technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to Have:
- Deep hands-on experience with AWS (SQS, SNS, DynamoDB), Kafka, Kubernetes or Terraform;
- Experience driving Continuous Delivery practices in cloud environments;
- General understanding of the telecommunications industry.
