Staff Software Engineer, MCP and A2A
Department & Team: Engineering – MCP Orchestration
Location: Virtual Office (Portugal)

Summary
We're looking for a Staff Engineer to build the MCP, A2A, and agentic workflow systems at Genesys. This is a hands-on build role. You will design and ship MCP servers and clients, the agent-to-agent communication layer, and multi-step agentic workflows that run real customer work in production. You own significant pieces of this stack end to end, from design through production debugging.

Key Responsibilities

• Build MCP servers and clients: tool and resource schemas, transports, auth and scoping, versioning
• Build A2A components: agent discovery, capability advertisement, task delegation and handoff, message contracts, failure semantics between agents
• Build multi-step agentic workflows: planning and tool-call loops, state and context management, memory, human-in-the-loop checkpoints, retries, termination conditions
• Own the reliability, latency, and cost characteristics of the agent systems you ship
• Build evaluation and observability for agent behavior: tracing across agent hops and tool calls, eval harnesses, regression gates
• Harden agent systems against tool abuse and prompt injection, with least-privilege tool access
• Debug non-deterministic production failures across multi-agent paths
• Work closely with the Principal Engineer on architecture, and with other engineers through code and design review

Minimum Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Deep hands-on experience building with LLMs and agent frameworks (LangGraph, AutoGen, CrewAI, or custom orchestration)
• Practical experience with MCP and/or A2A, or strong grasp of the underlying concepts and a fast ramp
• Proven systems design skills: state, concurrency, failure modes, and observability in distributed, non-deterministic systems
• Proficiency in Java and/or TypeScript/Node
• Track record shipping and operating complex systems in production, not just prototyping them
• Comfort operating with ambiguity in a space where best practices are still being written
• Clear communication, including explaining agent behavior to non-technical stakeholders

Desirable Skills

• Experience with evaluation frameworks for LLM and agent outputs
• Contributions to open-source agent or protocol projects
• Experience with RAG pipelines and vector databases
• Proficiency in Python
• Experience with prompt engineering and context management at scale
