About Redwood Materials

Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.

Position Summary:

Redwood Materials is seeking a highly experienced Staff Field Engineer, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to serve as a senior technical authority for the deployment, commissioning, operation, performance optimization, and lifecycle support of utility-scale and commercial battery energy storage systems.

This position is responsible for solving the organization’s most complex field engineering challenges across medium/high-voltage electrical systems, power conversion systems (PCS), battery modules, battery management systems (BMS), controls, communications, and SCADA interfaces.

The Staff Field Engineer will operate with a high degree of autonomy and serve as a senior technical escalation point for complex, high-impact issues that cannot be resolved through standard service procedures or conventional troubleshooting methods. The role requires substantial independent engineering judgment and is expected to resolve problems for which established procedures, documentation, or technical precedent may not exist.

The position will lead system-level troubleshooting, failure investigations, root-cause analysis, performance recovery, and technical resolution of critical equipment and system failures. Decisions and recommendations made by this role may directly affect personnel safety, system availability, customer operations, project schedules, lifecycle cost, and the reliability of Redwood’s deployed energy-storage portfolio.

Beyond individual site support, the Staff Field Engineer will translate field experience into scalable improvements across Engineering, Product, Quality, Operations, and Service, helping improve product reliability, serviceability, commissioning effectiveness, and long-term fleet performance.

Extensive travel, up to 75%, is expected to support critical deployments, commissioning activities, complex technical investigations, and escalations across Redwood’s operating footprint.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advanced Field Engineering & Technical Authority
    •  Serve as a senior technical authority and highest-tier field escalation resource for complex BESS commissioning, operational, performance, and reliability issues.
    • Independently lead advanced system-level troubleshooting across high-voltage electrical systems, PCS/inverters, battery modules, BMS, controls, communications networks, SCADA interfaces, and balance-of-system equipment.
    • Diagnose complex and intermittent failures involving interactions between electrical, mechanical, controls, firmware/software, communications, and thermal systems.
    • Exercise independent engineering judgment to develop technically sound solutions when established troubleshooting procedures, documentation, or precedents are insufficient.
Lead system commissioning, energization support, functional validation, performance testing, and operational-readiness activities for new and existing BESS installations.
    • Develop and execute technical recovery strategies for critical equipment failures and system outages while balancing personnel safety, equipment risk, system availability, customer impact, and schedule.
    • Provide advanced remote and on-site technical support during critical system events and escalations.
    • Validate system configuration, operational parameters, firmware/software interfaces, controls integration, and equipment performance against engineering requirements and intended system operation.
    • Identify technical risks during commissioning and operation and provide recommendations regarding system readiness, continued operation, corrective action, or escalation.
  • Technical Leadership & Project Reliability & Performance
    • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and field guidance to engineers, technicians, contractors, and third-party service organizations.
    • Serve as an escalation resource when technical issues exceed established field-service procedures or require advanced engineering analysis and judgment.
    • Coordinate complex technical activities involving Operations, Engineering, Product, Quality, EHS, customers, suppliers, EPC partners, OEMs, and third-party service providers.
    • Lead technical discussions during significant system failures, commissioning challenges, and customer-impacting events.
    • Develop and standardize advanced troubleshooting methodologies, commissioning procedures, work instructions, diagnostic processes, and field engineering best practices.
    • Develop and deliver technical training and knowledge-transfer activities that increase the capability and independence of the broader field organization.
    • Analyze operational, alarm, event, and performance data to identify emerging failure modes, systemic issues, and opportunities to improve system availability and lifecycle performance.
    • Represent Field Operations during design reviews, technical readiness reviews, failure reviews, commissioning reviews, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
    • Provide technical input into new product introduction, equipment qualification, service strategy, tooling, diagnostic capability, and design-for-serviceability.
  • Safety, Compliance & Documentation
    • Uphold and actively reinforce the highest standards of high-voltage, electrical, battery, and field safety.
    • Serve as a technical leader in identifying and mitigating electrical, battery, thermal, and operational hazards.
    • Ensure field activities comply with applicable Redwood requirements, electrical safety practices, LOTO requirements, energized-work controls, site procedures, and applicable codes and standards.
    • Maintain accurate and technically rigorous commissioning records, service documentation, root-cause reports, technical findings, corrective actions, and system records.
    • Develop technical reports that clearly communicate complex engineering findings, risk assessments, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Support emergency response, critical system events, and on-call technical escalation as operationally required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or related technical discipline preferred; equivalent combination of education and extensive directly relevant technical experience may be considered.
  • 8+ years of progressively responsible engineering, commissioning, field engineering, or advanced technical experience supporting BESS, power conversion, utility-scale energy systems, industrial power systems, renewable-energy infrastructure, or similarly complex high-voltage equipment.
  • Advanced electro-mechanical and power systems expertise focused on utility-scale or commercial BESS (PCS, BMS, thermal systems, protection relays, SCADA interfaces).
  • Demonstrated experience independently resolving complex field issues and leading technically significant commissioning, troubleshooting, or failure-analysis activities.
  • Strong understanding of relevant electrical codes, standards, and grid interconnection requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, control schematics, and OEM documentation.
  • Experience providing technical leadership and direction in field environments.
  • Experience collaborating directly with Engineering, Product, Quality, Operations, customers, EPCs, suppliers, OEMs, and third-party service organizations.
  • Physical ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs., climb, work at heights, and perform field tasks in varied outdoor conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; ability to travel extensively (up to 75%), including nights, weekends, and on-call as needed.

The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
