We are looking for a highly experienced and technically strong Staff Backend Engineer with 5–12 years of software engineering experience to design, build, and evolve scalable backend systems and core platform capabilities. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in backend engineering, distributed systems, API design, and building reliable platforms that support high-volume applications and business-critical workloads.
As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will operate at a high level of technical ownership, solving complex engineering problems and driving architecture and implementation across multiple services and teams. You will work closely with product managers, architects, infrastructure engineers, and other technical stakeholders to build robust systems that are scalable, secure, observable, and maintainable.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain highly scalable, reliable, and high-performance backend services, APIs, microservices, and platform components.
- Own the architecture and technical direction of critical backend systems, from design through implementation, deployment, and ongoing optimization.
- Build backend platforms capable of supporting significant traffic, data volumes, and concurrent workloads while maintaining performance and reliability.
- Solve complex distributed systems and scalability challenges involving service communication, data consistency, caching, concurrency, fault tolerance, and system availability.
- Design well-structured APIs and services that are secure, extensible, observable, and easy for other engineering teams to consume.
- Identify performance bottlenecks and drive improvements across application architecture, databases, APIs, and infrastructure.
- Establish engineering standards and best practices for backend development, testing, observability, reliability, and production operations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business and product requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Lead technical discussions, architecture reviews, design reviews, and engineering initiatives involving multiple teams.
- Mentor senior and junior engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to platform modernization, service decomposition, automation, and improvements to developer productivity.
- Investigate complex production issues, conduct root-cause analysis, and implement long-term solutions to improve system reliability.
Must-Have Skills
- 5–12 years of professional software engineering experience, with significant experience in backend development.
- Strong hands-on expertise in backend engineering and designing production-grade services.
- Proven experience building systems that operate at scale, including high-throughput, high-availability, or distributed environments.
- Strong understanding of platform engineering, distributed systems, service-oriented architectures, and microservices.
- Expertise in at least one modern backend programming language such as Java, Go, Python, C++, Kotlin, or Node.js.
- Strong knowledge of API design, databases, caching, messaging systems, concurrency, and system performance.
- Experience designing scalable architectures with appropriate considerations for reliability, security, observability, and maintainability.
- Strong understanding of cloud-native development and modern deployment practices.
- Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and system-design capabilities.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical decisions across engineering teams.
Good-to-Have Skills
- Experience working with Kubernetes, Docker, or containerized platforms.
- Exposure to AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Experience with Kafka, Redis, Elasticsearch, or other distributed infrastructure technologies.
- Familiarity with CI/CD, infrastructure automation, monitoring, logging, and distributed tracing.
- Experience leading large-scale technical initiatives or platform migrations.
- Contributions to engineering standards, internal platforms, or open-source projects.
Education
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
