In Lucid Air and Lucid Gravity, we have designed and built vehicles that have redefined their segments, combining exceptional range, performance, design, and expansive space in a single experience.

We achieve this through deep vertical integration, with design, engineering, and production happening in-house across our global offices and manufacturing facilities. Our teams come from industries around the world, united by a shared commitment to excellence. By refusing to settle, you can help redefine what’s possible and shape the future of mobility.

About the Team

Restraints team has responsibility over the airbags, seatbelts, and steering wheels at Lucid Motors, taking the inputs from interfacing teams and the technical product description, and managing the products from concept through the production life such that they meet all requirements. What is unique about Lucid Restraints, and Lucid more broadly, is the opportunity and expectation for each individual to gain autonomy and take ownership of their product area, while making decisions in collaboration with (and in support of) the broader team’s expertise.

 About the Role

We are currently seeking a Sr. Engineer, Seatbelts, reporting to the Manager of Steering Wheel Unit and Seatbelts. This position requires an excellent understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals with enough experience with Seat Belt system development to be responsible for seatbelt projects with autonomy. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate excellence in their respective fields, to possess the ability to learn quickly and to strive for perfection within a fast-paced environment. The candidate with the target experience and ability would have the opportunity to define the strategy and architecture of the seatbelt system, and influence our design processes and methods used for assessment. The role would start with sustaining existing projects and developing their new variants and derivatives, but is expected to have increasing duties on new development over time.

What You Own

  • Achieve product technical excellence as well as economical, timing and quality targets.
  • Collaborate with the design studio, ergonomic, seating, BIW and interior engineering teams to develop the optimum restraint system packages for occupant protection performance and interior styling.
  • Provide guidance and requirements to internal teams on required reaction forces or displacements, keep out zones, and lead conceptual design of required guides, brackets, etc.
  • Manage Tier 1 suppliers for both engineering development and program timing. Function as the main point of contact for all supplier interfaces.
  • Support restraint system integration work: 1) Seatbelt integration into seat, BIW and other surrounding vehicle environments, accounting for seat kinematics and related interactions during crash events. 2)Provide expertise on restraint system design to help achieve regulatory and consumer safety targets for our new vehicles. Work closely with CAE and Crash Test teams to provide design inputs and utilize CAE and test results to optimize the component design.
  •  Support crash tests and vehicle homologation. Make sure parts are supplied with correct pedigrees for all crash test vehicles and other vehicle level validation and homologation needs.

What You Bring

Minimum Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of Mechanical Engineering fundamentals: mechanics of materials, materials properties, dynamics and biomechanics related to occupant safety, failure mechanics
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skill to apply the engineering knowledge to solving practical problems
  • Enough CAD skills to package the component models into the vehicle environment, and check and define interfaces with the rest of the vehicle. The ideal candidate should possess enough CAD skills to design brackets, fixtures, or offer proposals for modifications of the seatbelt and interfacing hardware.
  • Strong ethics and diligence
  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Mechanical Engineering or other related fields
  • Generally, requires 5+years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Design and engineering of seat belts systems at an automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier having direct responsibility of Product Development and System Integration.

  • Experience using APQP processes (DVP&R, 8D, DFMEA, DRBFM)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to be able to articulate highly technical issues for general audiences not in the crash safety field, such as top management, design studio, purchasing team, etc.
  • Strong ownership mindset to work independently and fulfil the tasks in a timely manner.
  • Excellent soft skills to manage suppliers, push the envelope to develop optimal technical solutions, ensure timely delivery of all components
  • Knowledge of CAE analysis (e.g., LS-Dyna) and restraint system integration and optimization
  • 6 sigma Green or Black Belt
