Job Description

Responsible for the preparation and review of the financial statements through the coordination of the month end close and reporting process. Responsible for gathering and analyzing complex financial information, evaluating accounting implications, and formulating recommendations for senior management based on findings. Provide technical guidance on accounting and fiscal procedures. Responsible for continuous improvement through the evaluation of accounting and reporting controls and the implementation of corrective action plans. Supports the implementation of projects to improve and/or facilitate accounting and reporting functions. Works with internal and external auditors and implementing recommendations, as applicable and fields internal and external inquiries, including those from external parties.

What You’ll Do

• Review journal entries and account reconciliations, assist with the monthly close activities,  prepare schedules and other general accounting functions.

• Manage or perform functions related to accounting and or reporting on a GAAP/SAP basis.

• Participate in financial accounting issues resolution and process procedural changes.

• May be responsible for setup and maintenance of accounting system, chart of account, or other reporting and accounting sub-systems.

• Provide leadership, coaching, support & problem solving assistance, and knowledge transfer to others.

• Research financial and operating data (including technical accounting pronouncements, promulgated regulatory bulletins, and benchmarked industry information), prepares financial analyses and reports of findings and prepares recommendations to management,

• Perform due diligence reviews through detailed research of financial information.  Review deal structures, evaluate accounting implications, and make recommendations as appropriate.

• Initiate projects to improve processes/controls, partner with project teams to ensure resolution of project/post-project issues and participate on cross-functional projects as a finance representative.

• Review financial statements and supporting documentation for GAAP/SAP monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for internal/external audiences.

• Work closely with other BCBS plans and the BCBSA to resolve accounting and reporting issues.

• Assist with audits by providing requested information to auditors and resolve issues and draft resolutions.

• Maintain and enhance internal controls and perform self-testing.

What You Bring   

• Bachelor's degree or advanced degree (where required)

• 5+ years of experience in related field.

• In lieu of degree, 7+ years of experience in related field.

Bonus Points 

• Familiarity with insurance-specific accounting concepts, including premium accounting, loss reserves, claims accounting, and reinsurance transactions.

• Advanced proficiency in ERP systems such as Oracle, SAP, Workday, or Microsoft Dynamics.

• CPA designation or progress toward obtaining CPA certification.

Salary Range

At Blue Cross NC, we take great pride in a fair and equitable compensation package that reflects market-price and our starting salaries are typically planned near the middle of the range listed. Compensation decisions are driven by factors including experience and training, specialized skill sets,  licensure and certifications and other business and organizational needs. Our base salary is part of a robust Total Rewards package that includes an Annual Incentive Bonus*, 401(k) with employer match, Paid Time Off (PTO), and competitive health benefits and wellness programs.
