General Description:

Provides internship training/support to special education high school students with disabilities at different job sites. Transports students to and from job sites. Assists staff with recordkeeping and provides clerical support.

Job Description:

Essential Job Functions:

  • Trains and provides support to students at the job site to include implementing task analysis and monitoring performance; data collection, prompting, and modeling work tasks through the task analysis worksheet; 

  • Collaborates with business owners to adjust tasks as necessary;

  • Transports students to and from job site;  

  • Assists students with special needs on to or out of the vehicle;  

  • Performs safety inspection prior to operating vehicle and equipment; 

  • Ensures that vehicle is regularly maintained; 

  • Keeps the vehicle clean, properly heated and ventilated;   

  • Maintains records and prepares required reports; 

  • Creates reports concerning discipline problems, incidents, or injuries, etc.;

  • Provides clerical support to include copying, collating, answering phones, typing correspondence, reports and forms;

  • Act as a liaison for youth between various systems; 

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Report Preparation:  

Clerical reports as assigned by the transition coordinator.  Completes and submits monthly and weekly reports that include, pre-trip inspection forms, mileage and student attendance; long and short route forms, maintenance defect reports, student conduct referrals, vandalism and injury reports and other reports submitted periodically, or as needed.

 

Equipment Operation:  

School bus with either manual or automatic transmission, equipped with certain specialized equipment, such as, wheelchair lifts, securement devices, positioning devices, child safety restraint systems, etc. Office equipment; computer, fax machine, etc.


Contacts:

Transition Employment Coordinators, school staff, students and job site staff.  Police, fire or rescue personnel, teachers, parents or other transportation personnel – periodically regarding incidents, accidents or at the direction of the supervisor.

Decision Making:

Independently resolves problems when a student does not understand expectations.  Supervisory approval is required when substantial changes are made to the students program such as removing students from the work site or changing job tasks. Makes independent decisions as needed to complete the mission of transporting students to and from school; makes decisions within the guidelines of the school division’s Code of Conduct related to inappropriate student behavior.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, daily the employee is regularly required to sit; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; reach with hands and arms; stand; walk; and smell.  The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 40 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Uses special equipment or special devices to secure students.   Enforces safety and conduct regulations using age-appropriate physical handling, communication, and behavior management techniques.

 

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a school or office environment; the noise level is quiet to moderate.  While transporting students the employee regularly performs work in a moving vehicle and is exposed to outside weather conditions; the noise level is moderate to loud and the employee is exposed to environmental and health factors associated with transporting students and driving a large vehicle.

Qualifications:

Some knowledge of: childhood growth and development, behavior management techniques of general academic subjects sufficient to teach others; different types of disabilities; exceptional education local policy and best practices; state and local school bus operation, laws and regulations, including confidentiality and county geography.  

Demonstrated ability to: supervise children in the absence of a supervisor and to redirect work of students; to perform basic clerical tasks; communicate effectively orally and in writing and follow oral and written instructions; communicate and/or collaborate with students, staff, business personnel and parents in a professional manner; apply first aid procedures including CPR; operate a large vehicle safely and punctually in all weather conditions, using safe and defensive driving methods; maintain bus discipline and provide constant attention and assistance to a number of children at the same time, especially children with special health conditions or disabilities; perform physical tasks such as lifting children and work well under stressful conditions or emergencies; establish a supportive and helpful relationship with the youth in transition and other identified important relationships.

Additional Job Requirements:

Prefer two years of college, or education, training or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  

Valid VA Driver’s License required, CDL License with passenger endorsement recommended. 

This position requires the incumbent to drive. In accordance with Policy 5431, an employee who occupies the position and is assigned a district-owned or leased motor vehicle will be subject to annual driving checks and must maintain acceptable records pursuant to the standards set forth in the policy. Meets physical qualifications for school bus drivers; successful completion of state-approved school bus driver training course;  First Aid and CPR course recommended.

  • Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation

  • Tuberculosis Screening/Test
