$22.25 - $37.27

(based on a full time schedule of 40 hours per week).

Please note that the final offer will vary based on scheduled hours. Compensation for part-time or reduced schedules will be prorated based on scheduled weekly hours, experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.

Under the direction of the Sterile Processing Leadership Team, an SPD Tech I will perform decontamination, inspection/assembly, high level disinfection(HLD)/sterilization, storage and distribution of instruments, devices and medical equipment throughout the UMass Network, along with other associated tasks, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process while maintaining a clean, safe and organized workspace.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Decontamination
a. Collects, receives and records soiled instruments/equipment/devices for decontamination process and associated tasks as outlined by established policy/process, guided by industry regulations/recommendations and manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU).
b. Utilizes equipment, tools, solutions and personal protective equipment in a prescribed manner while following universal safety precautions.
c. Maintains clean, safe and organized workspace and other associated tasks.
    
2. Inspection/Assembly
a. Inspects for cleanliness and proper functioning, assembles, packages and records instruments/devices and equipment following the established procedure for each.
b. Maintains clean, safe and organized workspace and other associated tasks.

3. Sterilization/High Level Disinfection (HLD)
a. Records and routes instruments/equipment/devices for proper sterilization or HLD as identified and outlined by manufacturer’s IFU and performs identified process/cycle with appropriate equipment.
b. Performs, monitors and records routine safety/efficacy testing of associated equipment in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and industry standards.
c. Maintains clean, safe and organized workspace and other associated tasks.

4. Sterile Storage 
a. Ensures proper inventory, rotation and distribution of instruments, devices, equipment, supplies and carts as observed by supervisors.
b. Assemble and distribute instruments and supplies according needs of end user.
c. Maintains clean, safe and organized workspace and other associated tasks.    

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Completion of, or enrollment in an accredited Central Sterile Processing Technician program.
3. Certification is required within one year of employment. Failure to obtain certification within one year will result in termination from this position.

Preferred:
1. Central Sterile Processing Technician Certification. 

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Knowledge of sterilization standards/procedures and associated terminology.  
2. Proficiency with basic computer functions.

They will utilize infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized workspace. They will contribute towards quality improvement and function independently as technicians.

    I.    Major Responsibilities:
    1.    Charge
    i.    Expected to take charge if they’re the most senior technician (weekday or weekend). Others can volunteer, but they need to take charge if no one is interested. (Will rotate with multiple SPD Tech II’s)

    2.    Continuous Quality Improvement
    i.    Performs quality audits

    3.    Decontamination
    i.    Collects, receives, and records soiled instrumentation, equipment, and devices for the decontamination process and associated tasks as outlined by the established policies and processes, guided by industry regulations and recommendations, and manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFUs).
    ii.    Utilizes equipment, tools, solutions, and personal protective equipment in a prescribed manner while following universal safety precautions.
    iii.    Maintains a clean, safe and organized workspace.
    iv.    Other associated tasks.

    4.    Inspection & Assembly
    i.    Inspects for cleanliness and performs function testing of instrumentation, equipment, and devices.
    ii.    Assembles, packages, and records instrumentation, equipment, and devices following the established procedure for each.
    iii.    Maintains a clean, safe, and organized workspace.
    iv.    Other associated tasks.

    5.    High-Level Disinfection and Sterilization
    i.    Records and routes instrumentation, equipment, and devices for proper sterilization or high-level disinfection (HLD) as identified and outlined by manufacturer’s IFUs.
    ii.    Performs identified HLD process or sterilization cycle with appropriate equipment.
    iii.    Performs, monitors, and records routine safety and efficacy testing of associated equipment in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and industry standards.
    iv.    Maintains a clean, safe and organized workspace.
    v.    Other associated tasks.

    6.    Sterile Storage
    i.    Ensures proper inventory, rotation, and distribution of instrumentation, equipment, and carts as observed by supervisors.
    ii.    Distributes instruments and supplies according to the needs of the end user.
    iii.    Maintains a clean, safe, and organized workspace.
    iv.    Other associated tasks.

    II.    Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:
    1.    Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
    2.    Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
    3.    Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
    4.    Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
    5.    Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
    6.    Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
    7.    Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

    III.    Position Qualifications:
    License/Certification/Education:
    Required:
    1.    High school diploma or equivalent.
    2.    Central Sterile Processing Technician certification that has been held for one (1) year.

    Experience/Skills:
    Required:
    1.    Knowledge of sterilization standards/procedures and associated terminology.
    2.    Proficiency with basic computer functions.
    3.    Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
    4.    Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments.  The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
