The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Exercises expert judgment, skill and knowledge in the performance of responsibility. Works independently, problem solves complex issues and generates reports that are accurate and concise. Ensures quality data and patient safety. Models professional behaviors, critical thinking skills and excellent customer service. Exhibits acquired knowledge of sleep/wake physiology and sleep pathology and shares this with others through formal and informal methods. Effectively takes charge of unit, manages equipment problems and patient schedule as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Collects, analyzes and integrates patient information to identify and meet the patient-specific needs, including physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, and pertinent medical/social history. Determines final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols. Reviews patient’s history and verifies medical order. Follows sleep center protocols related to the sleep study. When patient arrives, verifies identification, collects documents and obtains consent for the study. Explains the procedure and orients patient for in center sleep testing. Provides age appropriate patient education. Selects appropriate equipment and calibrates for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary. Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards. Performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization as appropriate.
  • Follows procedural protocols such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc. to ensure collection of appropriate data. Performs appropriate physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and make required adjustments. Follows “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values, such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.. Performs data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identifies, corrects and documents artifact. Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Implements appropriate interventions, including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.. Follows “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process. Scores sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines. Scores clinical events, such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc. utilizing American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards. Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data. Performs patient education and instruction appropriate for home sleep apnea testing if appropriate. Monitors patient safety and adhere to patient safety protocols.
  • Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues. Performs routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation. Follows HIPAA and privacy policies. Responds to sleep patient's procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate education utilizing sleep center specific protocols. Adheres to sleep center policies and procedures. Participates in the quality assurance program. Inspects and maintains sleep study related equipment and inventory. Complies with professional standards of conduct. Assists the medical director, clinical director and/or manager in all aspects of sleep center operations.
  • Reviews and evaluates sleep studies and provide appropriate feedback to staff as requested. Precepts staff on new skills, such as performing titration studies, new equipment, or quality assurance initiatives. Provides educational experiences at the lab through orientation of new staff and/or presenting evidenced based education for sleep lab staff.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Associate's degree in Polysomnography Technologist and 2 years experience in polysomnographic testing required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education as appropriate required
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download if appropriate required
  • Adherence to cleaning and disinfection procedures required
  • Adherence to AASM scoring parameters; identify artifact, inadequate signals and equipment failures and generate an accurate report required
  • Computer skills appropriate for the position required
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills required
  • Appropriate social, customer service, and teamwork skills required
  • Critical thinking and ability to work with minimal supervision to analyze complex situations and apply policy
  • Customer service skills, computer use agility, ability to work well in a team preferred


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • POLYSOM - Polysomnographic Tech (Registered) NYS license upon hire required and
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support certification or CPR upon hire required
  • AASM - Registered Polysomnographic Technologist upon hire required
  • RPSGT - Registered Polysomnographer Technologist upon hire required
