Summary of Role:

GlobalFoundries is seeking a Reliability Engineering Intern to support the development and qualification of Silicon Photonics technologies involving CMOS devices and photonic components. Working with experienced reliability engineers and cross-functional teams, the intern will contribute to reliability testing, data analysis, failure-mechanism studies, literature reviews, lifetime modeling, and qualification activities for devices such as waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, and lasers.

Essential Responsibilities include:

• Assist in the design and evaluation of reliability test structures for CMOS and Silicon Photonics devices.

• Support execution of reliability stress tests, laboratory measurements, and characterization activities for photonic and semiconductor devices.

• Collect, organize, validate, and analyze reliability data; summarize trends and communicate findings to engineering teams.

• Participate in development of reliability models, statistical analyses, and lifetime projections under the guidance of experienced engineers.

• Perform literature reviews related to Silicon Photonics reliability, degradation mechanisms, photonic-device failure modes, and applicable industry reliability standards.

• Assist with investigations of device reliability concerns and failure mechanisms involving waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, lasers, and related optical communication components.

• Support hardware planning, test readiness, and laboratory activities needed to meet technology-development and qualification project schedules.

• Collaborate with Technology Development, Manufacturing, Process Integration, Design Engineering, Test, and Reliability teams on photonic and CMOS qualification projects.

• Document experimental methods and results and prepare clear technical reports and presentations.

Other Responsibilities:

• Perform all activities in a safe and responsible manner and support all Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs.

Required Qualifications:

• Education – At least a sophomore at time of application and actively pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Photonics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Applied Physics, Semiconductor Engineering, or related field through an accredited degree program during the time of internship.

• Must have at least an overall 3.0 GPA and be in good academic standing.

• Language Fluency - English (Written & Verbal)

• Ability to work at least 40 hours per week during the internship.

• Basic understanding of semiconductor device physics and an interest in semiconductor devices and photonics.

• Ability to analyze technical data, solve engineering problems, and work effectively in a collaborative environment.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Prior related internship or co-op experience

• Demonstrated prior leadership experience in the workplace, school projects, competitions, etc.

• Strong interest in leveraging AI tools and emerging technologies to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and support effective decision-making.

• Project management skills, i.e., the ability to innovate and execute on solutions that matter; the ability to navigate ambiguity.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Strong planning & organizational skills

• Coursework or research experience in Silicon Photonics, optoelectronics, semiconductor devices, materials science, or reliability engineering.

• Familiarity with photonic devices such as waveguides, modulators, photodetectors, lasers, or optical communication systems.

• Experience with laboratory measurements, experimental research, or data analysis using Python, MATLAB, JMP, Minitab, Excel, or similar tools.

• Understanding of basic statistics and reliability concepts.
