Job Description:

Come serve the Oregon Legislative Assembly as a Nonpartisan Administrative Professional!

The Oregon legislature is seeking 15-20 limited-duration Session Committee Assistants to support the 2027 Legislative Session. These roles offer a unique front-row seat to the legislative process and an opportunity to serve in a fast-paced, nonpartisan environment.

These are limited-duration, full-time positions, on-site at the State Capitol in Salem, Oregon, beginning in January 2027 and ending as committee work closes in June 2027.

This position does not craft, shape, or influence legislative policy, or perform research.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Acquire and develop a basic understanding of the legislative process
  • Deliver excellent customer service to elected officials, staff, stakeholders, and the public
  • Create meeting agendas as directed by committee analysts
  • Operate and monitor meeting recording systems, and create accurate meeting logs
  • Prepare meeting rooms and facilitate public participation in on-site and hybrid meetings
  • Record motions and votes, and handle confidential documents according to legislative procedure and policies
  • Create and maintain electronic files in accordance with Oregon public records law
  • Protect and adhere to the agency’s nonpartisan status and standards

Your Skills and Experience

  • Experience prioritizing multiple tasks and working efficiently within tight deadlines
  • Excellent organizational, customer service, and communication skills with close attention to detail
  • Ability to stay nonpartisan, maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion, and act professionally
  • Experience using MS Teams and other video conferencing tools
  • Proficiency with Windows 11 (MS Word and Outlook) and an ability to quickly learn internal systems and software

Working Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed in a professional office setting with frequent daily computer and office‑equipment use.
  • Consistent and reliable attendance is essential to meet operational and statutory deadlines and may require extra hours on evenings, weekends, and holidays during heavy workload periods, especially during legislative session.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s degree, AND
  • One (1) year of experience preparing and maintaining documents, providing customer/client service, and providing clerical coordination for a project, program, or organization

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position. An additional degree may substitute for one year of experience.

  

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, business administration, or public policy
  • Understanding of, or experience with, the legislative process

  • The Capitol building is located at 900 Court Street NE, Salem, OR  97301.  Regardless of any remote work agreement granted by your Appointing Authority in accordance with Legislative Branch Personnel Rule 26, you may be required to report to the Capitol Building under short notice.  Every effort will be made to provide reasonable notice.  While working from home, personal, stable, and high-speed internet access will be required to perform the functions of this position.

  • The salary in this job posting reflects the base salary without contributions to the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS). Employees eligible for PERS will have their salary increased by 6.95% and 6% will be automatically subject to a mandatory employee contribution to PERS.
  • The work experience and/or education section of your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet all the minimum and desired skills listed above.
  • An offer including salary will not be extended until an equal pay analysis is completed pursuant to ORS 652.220 and 659A.357.  An equal pay analysis will be conducted utilizing the education and work experience section of the legislative application.
