Location: This role will work onsite at our office located in Oxford, England (UK).
Job ID: 1948
The Role:
We are looking for a Senior Receiving Inspector to join our Quality team. As a Senior Receiving Inspector, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.
You will make sure that incoming, in-process and finished components meet their mechanical, electrical and PCBA specifications. You will also own the inspection side of the Material Review Board process, from handling and containing nonconforming material, through the inspection actions the board assigns, to verifying, closing and tracking nonconformance records once the Quality Engineer has given the disposition. As the senior technical resource for inspection, you will allocate the daily inspection work and guide less experienced inspectors. The ideal candidate combines technical expertise with the integrity to hold quality standards under production pressure.
Responsibilities:
Day to day, you will inspect incoming parts, in-process production and finished goods against approved specifications, drawings and purchase order requirements, deciding the inspection method and sequence with little instruction. You will interpret drawing callouts and datum structures to GD&T and ASME Y14.5, turn them into inspection plans and acceptance criteria, apply statistical sampling plans and use the right metrology instruments, including programming and running CMM, OMM or vision systems. You will support the calibration schedule, remove out of tolerance equipment from service and keep the inspection area to the local 5S procedure.
When something is wrong, you will control it. You will identify, tag, segregate and quarantine nonconforming material with correct lot and serial traceability to ISO 9001 and AS9100, sweep stock and work in progress to contain every affected lot, write the nonconformance record and present the inspection evidence at the Material Review Board. You will carry out the actions the board assigns, verify scrap disposal so nothing returns to the supply chain, and feed inspection data to the Quality Engineer for root cause analysis and supplier corrective action. You will also support internal, customer and regulatory audits, and keep to the quality management system, export control and customer contract requirements for controlled material and data.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading daily inspection of incoming, in-process and finished goods, including allocating the workload and verifying other inspectors' results and records before release
- Writing nonconformance records, presenting inspection evidence at the Material Review Board and completing assigned actions such as screening, sorting and rework verification
- Verifying and closing nonconformance records against the Quality Engineer's disposition, and keeping the MRB log and ageing report up to date
- Drafting and releasing inspection procedures and work instructions, and reporting metrics such as first pass yield, defect Pareto, NCR ageing and inspection turnaround
- Working with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain and suppliers on source inspection, first article inspection and quality problems
Requirements:
You will bring six or more years of related experience in a regulated manufacturing environment, including proven PCBA inspection to IPC-A-610 and experience of aerospace inspection processes and standards. You will have hands-on experience of controlling nonconforming product and of the Material Review Board process, and of using a Quality Management System or ERP nonconformance module to raise, track and close records and actions.
You read and interpret complex technical drawings with a thorough understanding of datum structures to ASME Y14.5, and you are expert with layout tools such as surface plates, height gauges, indicators, callipers, micrometers, gauge blocks and thread gauges. You have allocated work to, trained and guided less experienced inspectors, and you are confident with standard office software for data analysis and documentation. The role involves lifting up to 18 kg and standing for long periods, with strict adherence to safety and PPE requirements.
You’d be a great fit with:
- Clear communication at every level, from management to engineers and physicists, when resolving complex quality issues
- Working knowledge of root cause analysis methods such as 5 Why, Ishikawa or 8D
- Experience of first article inspection to AS9102 and of source inspection at supplier sites
- An ASQ Certified Quality Inspector or Certified Quality Technician qualification, or equivalent
- A quality first, self-starting approach, with precision under pressure and a willingness to support other quality functions
Compensation will vary based on individual factors such as education, qualifications, and experience of the final candidate(s), specific office location, and calibration against relevant market data and internal team equity. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Our benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans, matching 401(k), unlimited PTO and paid holidays, parental/adoption leave, legal insurance, and a home technology stipend. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided when a candidate receives an offer of employment.
