Our London & South East Cost Management team within Buildings & Places delivers some of the UK's most high-profile and impactful developments.

We are looking for a motivated Quantity Surveyor / Cost Manager to join our growing team. You will take ownership of defined project responsibilities, deliver high-quality cost management services and develop trusted relationships with clients and project teams. Supported by experienced colleagues, you will continue building the technical, commercial and leadership capability needed to progress to Senior Quantity Surveyor / Senior Cost Manager. We work hybrid and flexibly across our offices in London (Nova North), Tunbridge Wells, Epsom, Oxford and Cambridge, prioritizing where our clients and teams need us to be.

The Opportunity

You will join a high-performing team delivering a diverse portfolio across commercial real estate, healthcare, education, public sector, heritage, residential, life sciences and mixed-use development.

This role is suited to a consultant who is approaching professional qualification and ready to take greater responsibility for client-facing delivery. You will manage your own workstreams and smaller commissions, working with Senior Cost Managers, Associate Directors and Directors on larger or more complex projects.

Your role

  • Deliver quantity surveying and cost management services across all stages of the project lifecycle, working independently on defined activities and seeking support where appropriate.

  • Prepare feasibility studies, estimates, cost plans, cash flows, and commercial reports that support clear and informed client decisions.

  • Prepare and review measurements, bills of quantities, schedules of work, tender, and contract documentation.

  • Support procurement strategy development, tender processes, tender analysis, clarification, and contractor recommendation activities.

  • Manage project costs during delivery, including valuations, forecasting, change control, cost reporting, and final account activities.

  • Support contract administration and provide commercial advice under relevant JCT, NEC and other forms of contract.

  • Identify, assess and communicate project risks, opportunities, key cost drivers and potential mitigation measures.

  • Attend and contribute confidently to client, consultant and contractor meetings, taking responsibility for actions and follow-up.

  • Develop effective working relationships with clients and stakeholders through responsive communication and reliable delivery.

  • Collaborate with project management, building surveying, design, health and safety, engineering and other specialists to provide integrated solutions.

  • Undertake benchmarking, cost analysis, value management, and commercial assurance activities using reliable data and sound professional judgement.

  • Manage your workload, deadlines, and project records in accordance with commission plans, quality procedures, and governance requirements.

  • Support fee monitoring, change control, forecasting, and timely invoicing on the commissions to which you are assigned.

  • Contribute to bids, proposals, case studies, market engagement and the identification of repeat business opportunities.

  • Share knowledge and provide day-to-day support to graduates, apprentices, and assistant-level colleagues.

  • Maintain current knowledge of construction markets, professional standards, digital tools, and emerging industry practices.

About you

  • Experience in delivering quantity surveying or cost management services within a consultancy, client-side or contracting environment.

  • Experience across one or more property or built environment sectors, such as commercial, healthcare, education, residential, public sector, life sciences or mixed-use development.

  • A sound understanding of pre-contract and post-contract cost management, with practical experience preparing cost plans, estimates, tender documentation and commercial reports.

  • Working knowledge of UK construction contracts, particularly JCT and/or NEC forms.

  • Strong numerical, analytical, and commercial skills, with attention to detail and the ability to explain cost information clearly.

  • Confident communication and stakeholder skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with clients, consultants, and contractors.

  • An organised and proactive approach, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver reliable outputs to agreed deadlines.

  • The ability to work independently on defined responsibilities while contributing positively to a collaborative team.

  • A degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or related discipline.

  • Either MRICS or approaching MRICS chartership, with accreditation expected within 6 months of appointment.

  • Competence in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and relevant industry tools such as CostX or comparable measurement and cost management platforms.

What success looks like

  • High-quality cost and commercial advice is delivered consistently, accurately and on time.

  • You take clear ownership of your workstreams and progressively lead on smaller or less complex commissions.

  • Clients and project colleagues recognise you as responsive, reliable, and commercially aware.

  • Risks, change and emerging issues are identified early and communicated clearly.

  • If not yet MRICS, candidate should be almost ready to sit and prepared to sit an internal MRICS assessment.

  • You demonstrate increasing confidence in client management, project delivery, and commercial decision-making.

  • You contribute positively to team culture, knowledge sharing, and the development of junior colleagues.
