Senior Manufacturing Engineer – Module Assembly

Location: Derby, Manchester or Warrington (Hybrid Working Available)

Travel to Factory 2050 once a week is also required.

Reporting to the MDP Delivery Lead, the Senior Manufacturing Engineer - Module Assembly will provide senior manufacturing engineering expertise to support the Modularisation Development Programme (MDP).

The role will enable the successful delivery of demonstrators and experiments used to validate module design, manufacturing and assembly methods. The role has no direct line-management responsibility but will define resource requirements and coordinate functionally allocated internal, supplier and delivery-partner resources to achieve agreed technical, safety, quality, cost and schedule outcomes.

Working across design, manufacturing, facilities, quality, procurement and project delivery, the role will ensure that robust, production-relevant solutions support the integrity and performance of advanced nuclear technologies.

The Challenge

We need you to lead the delivery of module assembly demonstrators and experimental programmes that support the development of our modularisation approach. Working across engineering, manufacturing, procurement, quality, facilities and supply chain teams, you'll help ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the required technical standards.

This role combines project leadership, technical delivery and people leadership, providing a unique opportunity to influence how our future products are manufactured and assembled.

What You'll Be Doing

We need you to:

  • Modularisation demonstrators and experiments are delivered to agreed technical requirements, safety and quality expectations, cost and schedule.
  • Designs, manufacturing processes and assembly methods are robustly assessed for manufacture and are capable of producing the required experimental outputs.
  • Demonstrator delivery aligns with the Rolls-Royce SMR modularisation strategy, methods and intended module assembly approach.
  • Resource requirements are identified early, secured through the relevant functions and delivery partners, and coordinated effectively to support project delivery.
  • Manufacturing engineering work packages are clearly defined, planned, monitored and controlled, with risks, issues and dependencies actively managed.
  • Cross-functional teams, suppliers and delivery partners work to clear requirements, interfaces, priorities and delivery expectations.
  • Manufacturing knowledge, evidence and lessons from demonstrator activity are captured and communicated to inform future design and industrialisation decisions.
  • Functional coordination of internal, supplier and delivery-partner resources against agreed project and work-package plans.
  • Contribution to projects and work packages with budgets potentially extending to several million pounds annually.
  • Delivery performance measured through achievement of technical requirements, experiment outputs, milestones, cost, safety and quality expectations.

What We're Looking For

We're interested in hearing from people who can demonstrate:

  • Significant practical experience in manufacturing or industrial engineering, including the delivery of high-value or complex research and development, new product introduction, industrialisation or capability-acquisition projects.
  • Strong knowledge and practical application of design for manufacture and assembly, manufacturing process development, assembly sequencing, tooling, facilities and production-readiness principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to model strong safety behaviours and apply quality-focused engineering judgement in a regulated environment, including respectfully challenging others and helping to build a strong safety culture.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder-management and supplier-engagement skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional teams at all levels and provide clear technical direction without relying on direct authority.
  • Proven ability to define, plan, resource, monitor and control engineering projects, work packages and technical deliverables, ensuring delivery to agreed cost, quality and schedule.
  • Professionally Qualified Engineer (e.g. UK minimum HND/foundation degree or other national equivalent) in an engineering discipline.
  • Recognised professional engineering accreditation (e.g. ECUK IEng or CEng) is preferred.
  • Significant experience in manufacturing/industrial engineering, particularly in a regulated environment (nuclear, aerospace, defence).
  • Professional qualification in project management (e.g. APM PMQ, PRINCE2 Practitioner, PMP, or equivalent) is desirable.
