Your role

As Senior Manager of Journalism and Programming for the Estrie station, you are responsible for planning, guiding, organizing, producing and delivering content across all platforms (TV, radio and digital).

To develop your department, you manage the human, physical and financial resources assigned to you to achieve regional and Regional Services objectives. Under the overall authority of management, you work in tandem with all members of the leadership team and ensure that Journalistic Standards and Practices are applied throughout the department.

As Senior Manager, you are a creative, strategic, big-picture leader. You ensure the ongoing development of content creators by fostering their engagement and promoting inclusion. You thrive in a rapidly changing work environment, driven by the public broadcaster’s core values.

Key Tasks:

  • Define the editorial vision and assist in planning overall strategic objectives, as well as more specific objectives related to News & Current Affairs, editorial practices, digital platforms, impact journalism and breaking news coverage.
  • Advise the Regional Director on what actions should be prioritized to achieve departmental objectives and ensure their implementation.
  • Assist in analyzing audience needs and suggest relevant content to help achieve approved objectives.
  • Co-ordinate the human and administrative resources required to produce content across all platforms — digital, social, radio and TV (Téléjournal newscasts).
  • Engage and coach team leaders and encourage them to suggest and develop relevant features for audiences, whether in the areas of breaking news coverage, impact journalism, or arts, sports and social affairs content.
  • Suggest and oversee special coverage initiatives (e.g., special TV/radio broadcasts, podcasts, digital stories, documentaries), taking whatever steps are required to produce them.
  • Identify succession needs and sit on selection boards (or designate a representative).
  • Develop teams and participate in the performance management process for staff; if necessary, suggest ways to improve performance and skills development.
  • Represent station management at public engagement events as delegated by the station director.
  • Participate in various local, regional and national committees upon request.
  • Maintain contacts with other regional stations to maximize opportunities for efficiencies and synergy.
  • Assess operating and capital budget needs and recommend solutions to management. Monitor expenses in line with your department’s allocated budgets. Suggest actions based on programming and production requirements.
  • Respond to complaints and editorial issues in consultation with Legal Services.
  • Be on call on evenings and weekends as needed to respond to emergencies.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by management.

This role requires full-time on-site presence.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Ten (10) years’ journalism experience and two (2) to three (3) years’ experience in a management or leadership role.
  • Excellent knowledge of journalistic processes, newsgathering methods and program production for TV, radio and digital.
  • Knowledge of the Radio-Canada production environment.
  • Proven editorial judgment and news sense.
  • Strong knowledge of storytelling techniques and good understanding of platform-specific writing styles.
  • Creative thinking, bold approach and agility in devising innovative solutions, assessing workflows and building new processes.
  • Knowledge of effective management and change-management techniques.
  • Positive, collaborative and inclusive leadership to engage and inspire creative, self-motivated teams.
  • Proven track record in developing people and providing constructive, supportive feedback.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters.
  • Ability to think cross-functionally to manage a wide range of circumstances every day.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, clearly share your vision, listen attentively and demonstrate openness.
  • Broad knowledge base.
  • Good knowledge of current affairs.
  • Fluency in French (mandatory).
  • Good knowledge of English (asset).
  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
