Senior Field Technician

Job Purpose 

 

The Sr. Field Technician, based in Newark, DE, is responsible for conducting field work and related operations for Mueller’s Smart Water Infrastructure business, specifically in the areas of non-invasive acoustic technologies for underground pipeline water leak detection, monitoring and condition assessment.  

 

The role includes leading field data collection and supporting various processes throughout the project 

lifecycle including planning and reporting. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong critical thinking, written, verbal communication and organizational skills. The Sr. Field Technician will lead a small team of 2-3 people on site and coordinate with the project management, subcontractor, and client teams. 

Additionally, this role involves providing project support including supporting project update deliverables, client meetings, subcontractor management and client communication. 

 

The successful candidate will participate in a broad range of projects including field testing, administrative tasks, data analysis, reporting, client management, project management and will involve travel within Newark, DE and the United States of America. While the position is based out of Newark, there may be travel required to other areas of USA up to 25% of the time. Most of the project work will be outdoors, conducting leak detection and condition assessment tests on water pipelines, with planning and reporting duties between deployments. 

 

The Sr Field Technician role will be responsible for leading field work for a large condition assessment project to assess 90-miles of water mains within the city of Newark, Delaware 

 

This is a 1 year, fixed term opportunity.

Primary Accountabilities

Primary Responsibilities 

 

  • Working in the field, involving collecting data on-site and analyzing data for leak detection and condition assessment projects  

  • Reviewing data for reporting purposes 

  • Prepare various project reports 

  • Planning and coordinating logistics 

  • Conducting leak detection surveys of distribution and transmission water mains 

  • Creating leak sheets summarizing results for project and client distribution 

  • Leading collection of condition assessment measurements on distribution and transmission water mains. 

  • Summarizing results for project and client distribution. 

  • Installing and maintaining permanent monitoring infrastructure for leak detection purposes 

  • Managing and maintaining equipment, QA/QC and inventories in a storage unit setting. 

  • Project shipping and receiving tasks 

  • Proactively identify opportunities for continuous improvement in internal processes and systems related to the Operations function, and take the initiative to implement these enhancements 

  • Training and managing subcontracted labor onsite for hardware installation and data collection. 

  • Training clients to use and maintain equipment onsite, as well as perform Echologics services. 

  • Performing site inspections and documenting results in site inspection summary reports. 

  • Work in compliance with the Mueller Water Products Code of Conduct and all Environmental, Health and Safety regulations  

  • Administrative duties such as time tracking, expense tracking and subcontractor coordination 

 

Required Skills/ Background: 

 

  • A high school diploma or equivalent education 

  • 3+ years of related job experience performing field data collection or performing hands-on outdoor work 

  • Experience managing and coordinating small teams or subcontractors onsite 

  • Ability to use basic hand tools 

  • Experience with field use of testing equipment, such as surveying, sample collection, underground utility locating, GPS, etc. 

  • Experience interpreting GIS mapping interfaces and construction drawings 

  • Ability and desire to travel 

  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve technical issues and work independently. 

  • Basic computer skills and experience using email, MS Office, MS Teams and MS Excel 

  • Ability to interact with clients, customers in a field environment 

  • Experience with working on water distribution systems, or experience in utility industries 

  • Must hold a valid driver’s license 

  • Critical competencies: time management, team communication, written communication, customer focus, self-development   

 

These are considered assets: 

  • Experience in leak detection or condition assessment of water systems 

  • Engineering Technology/Technologist diploma in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, civil engineering technology, environmental science or similar 

  • Level 1 or higher water operator license 

  • Experience with installation of custom electronic equipment, such as security systems, sound systems, etc. 

  • Some knowledge and experience of the measurement of pressure and flow in water pipes 

  • Construction experience/ handling of power tools 

  • Confined space entry/rescue experience or certification (will provide training if certification not currently held) 

 

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements: 

  • Fieldwork Outdoors (95%) 

  • Site environment such as working in roadways or working in remote forested areas. 

  • Travel within USA, up to 25% of the time. May increase to 80% of the time towards the end of the contract term depending on organizational need. 

  • Ability to lift and push heavy objects; ability to lift 50lbs 

  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders and similar structures, and the ability to work on uneven surfaces 

  • Ability to work in small, confined spaces temporarily 

  • Ability to perform outdoor work in all weather conditions: 

  • Work in sometimes extreme weather environments (cold/heat). 

  • Work for extended periods occasionally 

  • Home-office environment (5%) 

  • Reporting & planning work in between field work deployments

Salary/Pay Range:

$50,465-$66,935 USD

The compensation range above reflects a good-faith estimate of starting base pay for full-time (40 hours per week) employment as of the date of posting. Individual compensation may vary depending on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, the role, professional experience, job-related skills, achievements, and/or work location. The range listed is only one component of the total compensation package offered to candidates.
