Resource Innovations is seeking a Senior Energy Engineer to join our growing team, with a preferred location in Indiana, and additional consideration for candidates based in Kentucky or Tennessee. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated engineer with strong experience in retro-commissioning (RCx)/optimization, energy audits, and commercial and industrial (C&I) energy efficiency programs. In this role, you will independently lead RCx projects for commercial and industrial customers, identifying, analyzing, quantifying, and supporting the implementation of cost-effective energy efficiency and operational improvement measures. The Senior Energy Engineer will work directly with customers, facility staff, and internal program teams to assess building systems, analyze operating data and controls, develop energy conservation measures, calculate energy and demand savings, support implementation, and verify project results.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Independently lead retro-commissioning (RCx) and building or system optimization projects for commercial and industrial customers from initial engagement and facility assessment through implementation support, verification, and final reporting.
- Conduct detailed site investigations and facility walkthroughs to evaluate building systems, equipment condition, operating practices, control strategies, and potential energy efficiency opportunities.
- Analyze HVAC systems, building automation systems (BAS), control sequences, schedules, setpoints, reset strategies, equipment sequencing, economizer operation, and other operating conditions to identify opportunities for improved energy performance and building operation.
- Review and analyze BAS trend data, interval meter data, utility consumption, equipment operating data, drawings, sequences of operation, and other available information to diagnose performance issues and identify energy conservation measures (ECMs).
- Develop technically sound and practical RCx measures, including engineering analysis, energy and demand savings calculations, implementation cost estimates, payback, and cost-effectiveness analysis.
- Prepare complete RCx studies and technical reports documenting facility conditions, identified opportunities, analysis methodologies, savings calculations, recommended actions, implementation requirements, and expected project benefits.
- Work directly with facility managers, operators, maintenance personnel, contractors, and other customer representatives to understand operational needs, validate findings, explain recommendations, and support implementation of identified measures.
- Provide implementation support by helping customers and contractors interpret recommendations, troubleshoot technical issues, refine control strategies, and confirm that recommended measures are implemented as intended.
- Perform or support measurement and verification (M&V) activities using pre- and post-implementation data to confirm measure performance, quantify realized savings, and document project results.
- Manage assigned projects through the full project lifecycle, including scheduling site visits, coordinating data collection, tracking open items, maintaining project documentation, meeting program milestones, and completing deliverables on schedule.
- Support customer outreach and project development activities by participating in customer meetings, explaining RCx services and program benefits, discussing potential opportunities, and helping identify facilities that may be good candidates for participation.
- Coordinate closely with outreach staff and other program team members to transition prospective customers into active RCx projects and maintain strong customer engagement throughout the project.
- Manage a portfolio of concurrent RCx projects, potentially including up to approximately 20 active projects, while balancing field work, engineering analysis, customer communication, implementation support, and reporting responsibilities.
- Exercise independent engineering judgment in resolving technical and project-related issues, while collaborating with the broader engineering team and utilizing peer review and technical support when appropriate.
- Participate in engineering peer reviews and incorporate technical feedback to maintain consistency, accuracy, and quality across calculations, recommendations, and final deliverables.
- Clearly communicate technical findings, project status, implementation barriers, and recommended next steps to customers, utility representatives, internal project teams, and other stakeholders.
- Identify technical, operational, and customer barriers that may limit project implementation and develop practical solutions to improve measure adoption and project outcomes.
- Support continuous improvement of RCx methodologies, engineering calculation tools, report templates, technical resources, and program processes based on lessons learned from field implementation.
- Maintain professional and productive relationships with customers, utility stakeholders, contractors, and internal team members through responsive communication and high-quality technical work.
- Conduct regular field work in the Evansville, Indiana area, with approximately 25–50% travel depending on customer outreach, project activity, site investigations, implementation support, and verification needs.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related engineering or technical field.
- 7+ years of relevant professional experience in energy efficiency, retro-commissioning (RCx), commissioning, building controls, energy engineering, or building systems optimization.
- Strong technical knowledge of commercial and industrial HVAC systems, including air handling systems, chilled and hot water systems, central plants, terminal equipment, ventilation systems, economizers, pumps, fans, and associated controls.
- Demonstrated experience independently conducting retro-commissioning, commissioning, energy studies, or similar building optimization projects, from initial facility assessment through analysis, recommendation development, implementation support, verification, and final reporting.
- Strong working knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), control sequences, and building operating strategies, with the ability to analyze schedules, setpoints, reset strategies, equipment sequencing, economizer operation, and trend data to identify operational and energy-saving opportunities.
- Demonstrated ability to identify, develop, and evaluate energy conservation measures (ECMs), including engineering analysis, energy and demand savings calculations, implementation cost estimates, payback, and cost-effectiveness.
- Experience analyzing BAS trend data, interval meter data, utility data, and equipment operating data to establish baselines, diagnose operational issues, quantify savings, and verify measure performance.
- Ability to conduct detailed facility walkthroughs and field investigations, evaluate equipment and operating conditions, and translate observations and data into practical, implementable RCx recommendations.
- Experience preparing complete, high-quality technical studies and engineering reports documenting facility conditions, analysis methodologies, identified measures, savings calculations, implementation recommendations, and project results.
- Ability to work directly with facility staff, customers, contractors, and other stakeholders to gather information, explain technical findings, build support for recommended measures, and advance projects toward implementation.
- Comfortable supporting customer outreach and project development activities, including participating in customer meetings, explaining the RCx process and program benefits, identifying potential project opportunities, and helping move interested customers into active projects.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, prioritize competing deadlines, and independently drive assigned projects from initiation through completion.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, technical writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex engineering concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, including Excel-based engineering calculations and data analysis.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic environment where building conditions, available data, customer priorities, and project scope may vary significantly from project to project.
- Willingness and ability to regularly conduct field work in the Evansville, Indiana area and travel approximately 25–50% of the time, depending on project activity, customer outreach, site investigations, and implementation support needs.
- Interest in sustainability and passionate about making a meaningful impact on the environment.
Preferred skills, education and experience
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license, Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP), Building Commissioning Professional Certification (BCxP), or similar energy or commissioning credential.
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Significant hands-on experience leading retro-commissioning investigations for commercial and industrial facilities, including customer kickoff, data collection, site investigation, BAS analysis, measure development, savings calculations, implementation support, M&V, and final reporting.
- Advanced experience troubleshooting HVAC and BAS control strategies and identifying optimization opportunities such as scheduling improvements, temperature and pressure resets, simultaneous heating and cooling reduction, economizer optimization, static pressure optimization, chilled-water and hot-water resets, and equipment sequencing.
- Experience developing or modifying control sequences of operation and working with controls contractors, facility operators, or service providers to implement recommended changes.
- Experience with measurement and verification (M&V) methodologies and analysis of pre- and post-implementation performance data.
- Experience identifying energy efficiency opportunities in additional systems such as compressed air, refrigeration, process heating and cooling, lighting, pumping systems, and other industrial or process equipment.
- Experience with utility-sponsored energy efficiency, demand-side management, RCx, or building optimization programs.
- Experience conducting customer outreach, developing potential energy projects, or presenting technical services and project opportunities to facility owners and operators.
- Experience preparing and presenting professional engineering studies, project findings, and recommendations to facility managers, operations personnel, utility representatives, and other stakeholders.
- Familiarity with applicable energy efficiency and commissioning standards and guidance, including relevant ASHRAE standards and guidelines, IECC, and industry best practices.

Compensation & Benefits
Resource Innovations offers competitive salaries based on a candidate's skills, experience and qualifications for the position. The compensation range for the base salary for this position is $95,000-$140,000. In addition to base pay, employees may be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus. The stated salary represents the expected compensation for this position. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as the candidate's experience, education and location.
