The Sr. Director, Scientific Licensing- Immunology role is a key member of Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine Business Development (IMBD) team that leads the Licensing strategy and supports its execution by identifying and evaluating opportunities that align with the strategy, building important internal and external scientific relationships and has the potential to lead assessment and diligence teams across the R&D Matrix. This role can be based out of Shanghai with a daily presence required at the Asia Pacific Innovation Center.

A key member of the Immunology Business Development Team within Innovative Medicine Business Development and responsible for contributing to the Therapeutic Area (TA) business development strategy in alignment with the over-arching TA and China strategy. Accountable for shaping the development and execution of the TA business development strategy including identification of target opportunities and companies via a process by which systematic screening in areas of interest is performed such that no opportunities are missed. This individual will be responsible for building strategic and scientific relationships with representatives of target companies and with immunologist, leading the scientific evaluation of target opportunities (including the coordination and management of the formal due diligence process) across the R&D matrix, collaborating with commercial assessment team to provide scientific input to commercial assessment and ensuring scientific evaluation addresses key value drivers.

The ability to navigate the internal organization will be critical and this person will be responsible for establishing and developing key stakeholder relationships in R&D leadership, identifying internal scientific champions for business development opportunities, and managing the upward scientific communication of external opportunities. The candidate will be accountable for ensuring that all business development opportunities progressing to contract negotiation and beyond meet the internal portfolio standards of scientific excellence, that development risks are identified, adequately communicated, and debated with R&D leadership and that mitigation strategies are captured and accounted for in the development plans and costs. In collaboration with External Innovation, New Business Development China and APAC colleagues, responsible for ensuring that R&D resources are engaged in an orderly, efficient, timely and cost-effective manner in the evaluation of licensing opportunities for the TA. Close collaboration with other IMBD colleagues to contributes to the development and enhancement of processes, templates, and data capture systems to be utilized by the business development group to attain the highest professional standards in the execution of duties.

Qualifications / Requirements:

A PhD or MD coupled with a minimum of 10 years of experience within Immunology industry/academia/biotech experience is desired

• Strong Immunology expertise with a track record of accomplishment in drug discovery/development in a field relevant to autoimmune diseases
• Experienced in external engagement with a deep network in China and APAC innovation ecosystem
• Excellent communication skills, English and Chinese preferred
• Experience in scientific due diligence is preferred
• Work experience in business development is preferred
• Excellent stakeholder management, ability to navigate complex organizations
• Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple projects and relationships at all stages of development
• Willingness to travel extensively in the region
• This role can be based out of Shanghai with a daily presence at the Asia Pacific Innovation center
