Overview:

The Senior Director of Engineering for Buyer & Community drives the technical vision and execution for eBay's core user experience. This role requires a visionary technologist who blends strategic leadership with elite technical execution.

Key Responsibilities

• Proactive Technical Strategy: Create, champion, and proactively influence eBay's deep technical strategy, aligning multi-year engineering roadmaps with macro technology trends and organizational goals.

• Talent and Execution: Lead, inspire, and scale a world-class engineering organization across architecture, platform, and product engineering, establishing a high-performance culture for senior engineering roles rooted in mentorship and career acceleration.

• Technical Depth: Maintain a high level of technical depth and architectural authority. While leading a large organization, retain the ability to comfortably dive into the codebase, prototype breakthrough capabilities, and champion the production-grade integration of advanced AI/ML technologies. Lead from the front, ensuring engineering excellence through technical credibility..

• Operational Excellence: Elevate engineering standards, including system design reviews, strict SLOs/SLIs, robust CI/CD pipelines, and proactive observability across global, distributed environments.

• Cross-Functional Influence: Partner with Product, Design, Data Science, and Business executives to unlock measurable business outcomes, manage technical risk, and mitigate technical debt.

• AI & Architectural Impact: Predictable delivery of major milestones and product launches (on-time, within scope). Clear architecture roadmap and measurable reduction in technical debt

• Organizational Growth: A thriving, high-retention culture of senior engineering talent with a clear pipeline of developed engineering leaders.

• System Vitality: Continuous improvements against rigorous SLOs, driving high availability, lower latency, and rapid deployment cycles

Required Qualifications

• 20+ years of software engineering experience shipping highly resilient, large-scale consumer internet applications.

• 6+ years of experience managing managers, with a track record of leading organizations of 100+ engineers across multiple geographies.

• Active Technical Depth: Ability to dive into the codebase, contribute to production code, and architect complex, distributed systems.

• Practical experience leveraging and deploying AI/ML technologies directly into production environments at scale.

• Demonstrated capability to attract elite engineering talent and build world-class engineering cultures.

• Strategic Influence: stakeholder management with the ability to shape deep technical strategy across an enterprise.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior engineering leadership within top-tier marketplace, e-commerce, or hyper-scale consumer internet companies.

• Deep domain expertise in event-driven architectures, microservices, and massive data platform engineering.
