SUMMARY:
The Data Quality team sits at the intersection of data, R&D, and the business. We investigate complex data questions, validate the quality and reliability of Placer’s data products, and help our customer-facing teams understand what the data is telling us - and, just as importantly, when something doesn’t make sense.
We’re looking for a Senior Data Analyst who genuinely enjoys working with data. Someone who loves investigating, solving puzzles, opening a dataset just to see what’s inside, and doesn’t stop at finding what happened but wants to understand why it happened.
A big part of the job is hands-on investigation in Databricks - writing code, creating notebooks, exploring large datasets, testing hypotheses, and following the data until you understand the story behind it. If reading data sometimes feels more like a hobby than a task, you’ll probably enjoy this role.
This role requires strong analytical judgment and an exceptional approach to QA. In an era where AI tools can generate code and analyses faster than ever, we care deeply about the ability to challenge the output, identify inconsistencies, ask the right questions, and determine whether the answer actually makes sense.
This is also a highly business-oriented role. You’ll work closely with our Commercial teams, understand customer questions from their perspective, and translate complex data findings into clear, actionable answers. For those interested, there are also opportunities to join customer conversations directly.
Responsibilities:
- Investigate complex data quality questions and customer-reported data discrepancies across Placer’s products and datasets
- Work hands-on in Databricks, writing code and building notebooks to explore and analyze large-scale datasets
- Dig into data to identify patterns, anomalies, root causes, and potential quality issues
- Build investigative analyses and QA processes using SQL and Python
- Design and perform rigorous validations to determine whether data and analytical outputs are reliable
- Form hypotheses, test them against the data, and keep digging when the first answer doesn’t fully explain what you’re seeing
- Challenge assumptions and distinguish between expected data behavior, methodological limitations, and actual data issues
- Work closely with Data Science, Engineering, Product, and other R&D teams to investigate issues and drive them toward resolution
- Partner with Commercial and customer-facing teams to understand the business context behind data questions and provide clear, practical answers
- Translate technical findings and methodology into explanations that non-technical stakeholders can understand
- Identify recurring issues and patterns and help improve our data quality processes, monitoring, and methodologies
- Use AI-assisted tools to accelerate investigation and coding while maintaining strong independent judgment and verification
Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience in data analytics, data research, business analytics, or a similar analytical role
- Strong SQL skills and experience working with large and complex datasets
- Hands-on experience with Python for data analysis, investigation, and QA
- Experience working with Databricks or a similar large-scale data environment, including writing code and creating analytical notebooks
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to investigate ambiguous problems independently
- Excellent QA instincts and attention to detail - you naturally question results that don’t make sense and know how to validate them
- Solid understanding of statistics, data quality, and analytical methodologies
- Experience using AI-assisted analytical and coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or similar tools, with the judgment to know when to trust, verify, or challenge their output
- Strong business orientation and the ability to understand data questions in the context of customer and business needs
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Strong communication skills and comfort working directly with customer-facing and Commercial teams
- Ability to communicate complex analytical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to independently own investigations across multiple teams and drive them through to conclusion
- And, ideally, you’re the kind of person who enjoys exploring data even when nobody asked you to
- B.Sc. in a quantitative field - advantage
